The CBC is proud to welcome Martin Burke, MD, PhD, May and Ving Lee Professor for Chemical Innovation, and Professor of Chemistry at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, to the BioCapital Summit! Burke is revolutionizing molecular innovation by creating a modular, automated approach to small molecule synthesis, democratizing access to molecular tools for drug discovery. His "chemistry that machines can do" has been widely adopted in academia and industry, enabling the discovery of new drugs and materials. Burke's work has led to molecular prosthetics, such as a small molecule therapy for cystic fibrosis now in clinical trials. His approach accelerates translational research, enabling faster development of therapeutics for diseases like cancer and fungal infections, with six drug candidates already in trials. Burke is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American Society of Clinical Investigation, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Burke is also a scientific founder of four biotechnology companies with six drug candidates that have entered clinical trials to date, including promising therapeutics for lung, colon, and pancreatic cancer, fungal infections, and cystic fibrosis. He is the founding Director of the Molecule Maker Lab at the Beckman Institute at Illinois Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and a founding member of the Molecule Maker Lab Institute at the Carl R. Dana holds a PhD in cellular and molecular neurosciences from Washington University in St. Louis, where her doctoral research led to the co-founding of a molecular diagnostics spinout company. During her postdoctoral fellowship at Washington University’s entrepreneurship center, she institutionalized support for SBIR/STTR-funded spinouts, facilitating the commercialization of scientific discoveries. In her current role as a Partner at Breakout Ventures, Dana drives the seed investment strategy and works closely with founders to help them achieve commercialization milestones. She has led due diligence on notable investments, further connecting her to the translation of science into marketable technologies. Before joining Breakout, Dana worked as a Senior Investment Associate at Ascension Ventures and continues to mentor through her involvement as a Kauffman Fellow.
