*The story behind the Chessie logo.* The original image of Chessie was the creation of Viennese artist Guido Gruenwald, who specialized in copperplate engravings of cats. His original etching of the sleeping cat became Chessie and was featured in the national magazine ad campaign designed by C&O Public Relations chief Lionel Probert and the Campbell-Ewald ad agency in September, 1933. The ad was intended to communicate the comfort of the newly air conditioned passenger cars on the C&O. Chessie (who received her name in 1934) was an immediate hit with the public. And requests poured in from all over wanting to see more of her. With some reluctance to use a kitten to symbolize a railroad, the C&O decided to use her as the image for the 1934 calendar. Demand exceeded the 40,000 printed. The rest is history.
