Last week, we participated in the 10th anniversary of the Community Engagement, Environmental Justice, and Health (CEEJH) Environmental Justice Symposium! Our Board Trustee, Vernice Miller-Travis, Executive Vice President of the Metropolitan Group, was a featured speaker at the event. Kacey Wetzel, Vice President of Programs for Outreach & Education, also spoke on a panel discussion, "Mid-Atlantic Environmental Justice Fund - Making Sure Those at the Frontline are at the Front of the Line to Get Their Money for Environmental Justice." Bay Trust staff members Samara Pyfrom, Lianna Gomori-Ruben, Jose Castellanos, Grace Dho, Kathy Somoza, Delaney Samons, Megan Andreasen, and Marylin Veiman-Echeverría were also present, engaging with attendees and sharing about the Bay Trust's MAEJF award program and other funding opportunities. ? Marylin reflected, "It was a joy to meet our awardees in person, like Kimberly Armstrong from Baltimore Green Justice Cooperative, whom I had worked with for a year but had never met face-to-face. I also had the pleasure of meeting one of our partners in the Environmental Justice Fund and the Environmental Justice Government to Government Grant Maria Payan and her son Mike from Sussex Health and Environmental Network. Maria's passion was truly moving as I listened to the stories of how they came to work on the EJ movement. The event deepened my understanding of the challenges EJ communities face, and the complexities involved in working with these communities and directing funds to where they are most needed." ? On Wednesday, we joined Governor Wes Moore for the launch of the Maryland Climate Corps! We are thrilled to be the regional operating partner to help support even more young professionals pursue green careers and fight climate change.?As our president Jana Davis shared, “this opportunity will continue to strengthen Maryland’s green career pathways, support young people in accessing the green jobs of the future, and help the state meet its climate goals.” This inaugural group will be working with 22 organizations to host more than 40 members. In the story, Urban Trees Senior Program Officer, Lianna Gomori-Ruben, shares how urban trees can enhance the quality of community livability, noting “when there’s more tree canopies in communities, crime rates are lower, heat disease risks are lower, emotional and mental health is higher, and we know that when we plant trees, we stimulate green jobs.” 2024 awardee Parson’s Cemetery?in Wicomico County shares how trees funded through this program will help them “to be good neighbors to the community at large… especially in an urban setting where there’s a lot more potential for pollutants to get washed off into, for our case, Johnson’s Pond, which goes to Wicomico, which goes to the bay.” Thank you to the State of Maryland and Baltimore Gas and Electric for making this incredible program possible!
