In a significant reversal, Virginia state regulators Tuesday killed the possibility of opening the blue crab winter harvest for the upcoming 2024/2025 season. "Virginia Marine Resources Commission's (VMRC) decision is a significant step toward a brighter future for the Bay’s blue crab population and helps ensure we have the best available science when making important decisions about Virginia’s blue crab fishery," said CBF Virginia Executive Director Chris Moore. This past summer, CBF and partners helped rebuild habitat through oyster restoration in southern Maryland. ?? But what does oyster restoration actually look like? Volunteers throughout the watershed support oyster restoration through oyster gardening (or growing baby oysters), building reef balls, recycling oyster shells, and more. There is new funding available for community-based environmental justice projects in EPA’s Region 3! ?? This grantmaking program via Green & Healthy Homes Initiative focuses on communities disproportionately impacted by climate and environmental injustice. The grants can support capacity building, provide funding for project assessment, planning, and implementation, and help communities overcome historic environmental and funding challenges. Unfortunately, Virginia lags behind neighboring states in environmental literacy funding. The Commonwealth’s elected leaders can support our students by increasing investment in environmental education this upcoming legislative session, says CBF Vice President for Environmental Education Tom Ackerman.
