This week, members of EBCI Tribal Option got to join 5th grade students at Cherokee Central Schools for a special Native American Heritage Month event. During a recent vacation to Cherokee, Montgomery County Schools Library Specialist Rhonda Burch from Blacksburg, Virginia came across EBCI Tribal Option's newly installed StoryWalk Project at the Island. She loved the book published on the StoryWalk so much that she reached out to Shae Deck, the CCS teacher who lead her class to publish the book to learn more. From there, we pitched the idea to Mrs. Deck to set up a zoom meeting with Mrs. Burch's students in Virginia to give Cherokee Central Schools students the opportunity to teach about their culture directly. This morning we joined Mrs. Deck's 5th grade class at CCS and three 5th grade classes from Virginia via zoom for an incredible opportunity to share about Cherokee culture, traditions and heritage. The students had the opportunity to interact with one another to learn about all the things that they have in common -- like a love of sports and good food during the holidays -- and the things that make Cherokee special -- like Stickball, the Cherokee language, and the 7 Clans. When we launched the StoryWalk project, we wanted to create a fun way to get kids in the community outdoors and active as part of our Eat Well, Play Well, Stay Well initiative -- while also fostering a love of reading. By publishing the book authored by Mrs. Deck's class, the project has grown into something bigger and serves as a way to introduce, connect, and educate visitors to Cherokee Culture. We can't wait to expand this project and get our next StoryWalk installed this Spring!

For Native American Heritage Month, we are recognizing Carmaleta Monteith, an Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Beloved Woman. This year, the CHEROKEE INDIAN HOSPITAL FOUNDATION established a new endowment through the North Carolina Community Foundation in Monteith’s name to provide financial aid for Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority employees. Since December 1, 2023 when Medicaid Expansion went live in North Carolina, EBCI Tribal Option has identified and enrolled more than 1,000 new members! These member, 1,017 and counting, are each enrolled members of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians or eligible beneficiaries who previously fell into the health insurance coverage gap. Under Medicaid Expansion, they now have health insurance!

A unique opportunity to work for Western Carolina University in a position funded by the Cherokee Indian Hospital: The successful candidate will serve?CIH?by offering clinical assessments and treatment plans to patients. The eligible candidate needs to have earned a doctorate (PhD or PsyD) in clinical or health service psychology from an accredited institution. Licensure as a psychologist is required. Current or eligibility for licensure in North Carolina is preferred.
