  • A slate, also known as a clapperboard, is used to identify which scene and take is being shot at any particular time. ?? Slating is also essential for syncing audio and video in post-production. The loud “clack” sound it makes causes a sharp spike on the audio track, marking the moment in which the post-production team matches the video frame of the slate closing. After using the slate, the director can start the scene with “action!” ??

  • Production designers might not get the recognition that directors, writers or producers receive for a project, but they are equally instrumental in its overall success. Their responsibilities on set range from supervising the art department to brainstorming the creative vision of the film with the director to managing the budget with producers. The story that is being told through film or television lives in a visual world. It is the responsibility, through collaboration with other professionals and departments on set, to create that world with authenticity and within the creative direction and overall budget of the project. • When you hear the director call “wrap,” that’s the end of the shoot day! ?? Wrap is an important phrase because it lets everyone know to stop production. Camera operators know to stop rolling and the film crew begins tearing down. Cast and other talent immediately know they are free to leave, so long as there are no post-production needs. It can also be used to wrap a scene, actor or item depending on the director.

  • Oscar Wilde once said: “Mere color…can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways.” A person in the position of colorist on a film or TV set would most definitely agree with him. The colorist, responsible for the indispensable duty of enhancing the visual look and feel of a project, works very closely with the director, director of photography and cinematographer on a project in post-production. They use color editing software to ensure that mood and color scheme is on point and consistent throughout the movie or show. The greenish hue present through “The Matrix” is a great example of how the work of a colorist can help convey the overall theme of a project. They’re irreplaceable in the creation of a project and can save the budget with their post-production skills and expertise. • We tend to think of movies and shows as visual works, focusing on what we see. However, one of the most important aspects of film is the sound. Enter the production sound mixer. It’s their job on set to capture and mix all the audio captured for a production. From operating the recording equipment to directing the sound team to managing the boom and wireless microphones, the production sound mixer is a crucial position on set. Imagine your favorite monologue in your favorite movie. Didn’t it sound amazing? Yes, it was because of the great writing and the actor’s performance, but it was also because a production sound mixer made sure of it. From scouting locations for potential sound issues before filming to solving audio problems like background noise in real time, what you hear in a film is the work of a dedicated professional. Curious about the wide range of jobs in the film industry? Follow Cherokee Film Institute to learn more about where you could find your perfect fit.
