As we continue to mark #16DaysOfActivism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), USAID's Higher Secondary Education Activity (HSEA) in Bangladesh, implemented by Chemonics, reflects on its first year of impact by prioritizing #safeguarding and #GBV prevention. Through training sessions with teachers, principals, vice-principals, and #education officials at targeted colleges, HSEA is fostering safer and more #inclusive learning environments. Looking ahead, HSEA is expanding efforts by: ? Introducing additional sessions on safeguarding practices. ? Strengthening GBV prevention mechanisms. ? Deepening commitment to ensuring safety and dignity for all students, especially women and girls. You can also watch this wonderful video, as staff from the activity share their commitments to fighting GBV: https://ow.ly/B2Fj50UfKYE

#WorldSustainableTransportDay is intended to highlight the importance of cleaner, greener transportation systems, because #SustainableTransport is central to #SustainableDevelopment. We’re proud to showcase the work that the USAID Sri Lanka Energy Program (SLEP) is doing in this regard! They are working with a number of partners to initiate groundbreaking projects geared towards making sustainable transport more accessible in #SriLanka. The first of these is a partnership with Cargills Ceylon, which has seen the retailers introduce “charge while you shop” at various locations in Colombo. This offers electric vehicle owners a convenient opportunity to charge their vehicles at charging stations complemented by solar energy. SLEP also worked with Jetwing Hotels Colombo Seven to launch city tours for their guests, using e-three wheelers, powered by e-charging stations run by clean energy generated through a dedicated solar system. This eco-tourism initiative is also an important step towards more sustainable transport options. In addition, SLEP recently won the popular vote award in the 2024 Society for International Development, United States (SID-US) innovation competition for the work they are doing with private sector leaders like Sling Mobility and Uber Eats. They have supported the creation of more than 20 charging stations around the capital city of Colombo, allowing gig drivers, including many women, to more easily charge the batteries for their electric vehicles and continue working. Today marks the start of the global #16DaysOfActivism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign ?? This year, we’re spotlighting the critical role of strengthening #safeguarding in the fight to #EndGBV. Our commitment to this is ongoing, and in 2025, we’re looking forward to ramping up our safeguarding initiatives. Stay tuned to this campaign to hear how our projects are: ? Actively preventing and combating GBV ? Safeguarding at-risk groups, including women and girls with disabilities, and LGBTQI+ communities. ? Supporting community-led advocacy to strengthen prevention and response to GBV globally. Today, we’re excited to feature insights from our senior safeguarding advisor, Margarett Lubin, in her compelling blog, “Three Questions with Margarett Lubin: Creating Safe and Inclusive Spaces” – emphasizing her perspective on how preventing and responding to GBV requires a nuanced approach, and how safeguarding has a key role to play in this. ?? We were thrilled to host USAID, Digital Impact Alliance, and the broader #DigitalDevelopment community for a rich discussion of how we can all contribute to “Doing Development Digitally.” At Chemonics, we know that digital solutions can drive economic growth and financial inclusion, support #accountability and #transparency in governance, and introduce new and innovative solutions across all technical sectors. This is key to making the programs we implement more efficient, effective, and impactful. Thank you, Manisha Aryal, for sharing your reflections!
As our friend Chris Burns said, “We can emphatically say that we’re in a digital age, and when it comes to the work we do, development is digital.” Couldn’t agree more! I was delighted to join USAID’s Christopher Burns and Digital Impact Alliance’s Kay McGowan, along with my Chemonics International colleagues and the #DigitalDevelopment community to discuss how implementing partners can meaningfully engage with both the new Digital Policy and the refreshed Digital Principles.? Reflecting on our conversation, a few key takeaways for me: We need to ensure that digital technology is used responsibly – so that it embraces #DemocraticValues, bolsters #InformationIntegrity, advances #HumanRghts, and promotes #InclusiveGrowth – from design to deployment.? ? #DataGovernance is about so much more than just protecting data. We need to work with donors, partners, and communities to promote ethical data use. ? ? At its core, digital public infrastructure is about ensuring that the foundations of digital systems are inclusive, transparent, and accountable. ? ? As technologies become increasingly complex, it will be important to promote radical inclusion.? We must ensure that we’re setting up the digital world for the benefit of all.? What does the next era of #DigitalDevelopment look like to you?

In attending the 2024 Society for International Development, United States (SID-US) annual dinner, we had the opportunity to reaffirm our fundamental belief in the importance of #SustainableDevelopment and the power of creating an inclusive environment to address critical challenges. ?? Our delegation had the opportunity to network with leaders and visionaries in development, celebrate honorees, and reflect on a year that proved to be nothing short of remarkable. SID-US President Katherine Raphaelson reminded us that change is inevitable, but with it comes immense opportunities to come together and build a better, more equitable, and more sustainable future. In the words of Former President of Liberia Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, "Everyone has a role to play in resurrecting the global cooperation we've all enjoyed." Thank you to our Chemonics representatives for embodying the spirit of global cooperation at the 2024 SID-US Annual Dinner! Arielle Berghammer-Ziegler, Branden Ryan, Evon Huber, Bridget Newell, Carsyn Fessenden, Edward Landreth, Garron Hansen, Karanina Bhattacharjee, Mallika Iyer, Rachel Marquez, Aleksandra (Sasha) Soboleva, Rebecca Logan, Susan Pascocello, and Giuliana Canessa Walker!
