Fast forward, and here I am, back in Cura?ao, leading my own cybersecurity startup, Checkmate Cyber Consultancy. I returned with a mission: to create opportunities for others in the field, empower our local talent, and protect the digital landscape of our community. ?? As I walked into the ISACA Cura?ao 10th Annual IT Conference 2024 on Day 1 at Centrale Bank van Cura?ao en Sint Maarten, I was reminded of how important these events are for keeping us all connected and informed in the fast-evolving world of cybersecurity. It was a pleasure to share my thoughts during my talk, "Trust on Trial: Verifying Third-Party Risks in Cloud, AI, and IT Services," where we focused on the importance of trust and transparency in managing third-party risks. ???? Although I couldn’t attend both days, I heard great things about the sessions and discussions that took place. This year’s theme, Pursuing Digital Trust in the Connected World, set the tone for what I’m sure was an insightful two days of learning. ???? Here’s a summary of the major incidents: ???? #TrinidadandTobago - Blue Waters Products Ltd: Victim of the LockBit3 group, known for their methodical ransomware attacks and data breaches. The attack compromised 10GB of data and temporarily disrupted automated systems. ???? #Curacao - Aqualectra Utility: Suffered a breach by the Akira ransomware group, impacting operational and payment records. Their tactic of ransomware-as-a-service and expertise in network scanning and lateral movements led to significant data compromise. ???? #Guyana - CARICOM Secretariat: Experienced a breach by Team HDP, a group claiming Venezuelan origins. The attack led to the exposure of sensitive staff data, underlining the susceptibility of governmental organizations to targeted cyber espionage. ???? #TrinidadandTobago - National Insurance Board (NIBTT): Faced a ransomware attack resulting in temporary office closures. Last year at Checkmate Cyber Consultancy, we took on a game-changing project: boosting cybersecurity smarts for 400 people across the Dutch Caribbean. Here’s a snapshot of our journey and the incredible feedback we received! ?? Simplifying the Complex: We discovered that the key isn’t just high-tech solutions; it’s people! Over 90% of security slip-ups are just human error. Our goal? Make cybersecurity easy and understandable for everyone. ?? Our Strategy: 1. Starting with the Basics: First, we figured out what everyone already knew about cyber threats. 2. Training Made Fun & Engaging: We ditched the jargon and made learning about cyber threats interactive and relatable. 3. Keeping Up the Momentum: Cybersecurity doesn’t stop after training.
