Without Tom Donovan, Chattanooga Zoo would not be what it is today. ?? Tom has long been one of our biggest supporters, helping the Zoo see incredible growth through his decades of unwavering support and hands-on involvement. Tom has made, and continues to make, significant contributions to major projects like the Gombe Forest Interpretive Center, Mimi's Pavilion and, most recently, The Cape of Africa! ?? Tom's late wife was also a major Chattanooga Zoo supporter, even serving on the board of directors. Barbara's Bridge (in the Himalayan Passage) and Mimi's Pavilion are both named in her honor. ?? Tom and Barbara have spent many years supporting our growth and direction, and also developed many loving friendships among the animals. In particular, Hank the chimpanzee was always very fond of the couple. Thanks to our friends at Morning Pointe Senior Living for writing this great article highlighting Tom's long-standing and ongoing support of your hometown Zoo.?? We love you Tom! ??

We are thrilled to announce that Saffron the red panda has given birth to a healthy male cub, making this the first red panda born at Chattanooga Zoo in eight years! Saffron is doing a wonderful job caring for her baby and, while we are conducting necessary wellness checks and keeping a very close eye on her and her cub, we have been able to let Saffron care for her offspring with very minimal interaction from us. Saffron's baby was named Pilatus by James Howard of WTVC-TV NewsChannel9 and Sunny 92.3. James is also a pilot who generously donated his time and expertise to transport Saffron to her new home with us last September, so we wanted to give him the opportunity to name Saffron's cub. Pilatus is a joy for us and the Chattanooga community, but he is also an important addition to the Red Panda SSP (Species Survival Plan) which aims to increase populations of this endangered species. With roughly 200 red pandas in AZA-accredited zoos (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) and between 2,500 to 10,000 left in the wild, repopulation and habitat protection are very important! Although Saffron and Pilatus have been spending most of their time off exhibit, Saffron has recently started carrying her cub into the enclosure where guests can see him. For the time being, the cub's location and visibility are totally up to Saffron. Pilatus will likely be old enough to explore his enclosure independently this fall. Stay tuned for more updates on Pilatus, and check out our blog for more info: https://lnkd.in/dksC9HNi
