The Chattanooga Design Studio is an independent, non-profit community resource that promotes excellence in urban design through education, facilitation, and collaboration. The Studio is governed by a twelve-member Board of Directors, and operated by a full-time staff of four. The work of the Studio takes many forms: studies, charrettes and exhibitions for the general public; programs for the professional design community; facilitation for community stakeholders; consultation with the development community; and resources for local government. The Chattanooga Design Studio builds upon the rich legacy of the community’s former studio that operated from 1980 until 2005. While there is no formal connection between the two iterations, they are linked by consistent funding partners, shared personnel, and philosophical alignment.

Cool work from Tinker Ma for the Civic Center District in Downtown Chattanooga!
Tinker Ma is busy preparing a 3D model for the Civic Center Study Area in Downtown Chattanooga.??It will be utilized at the public design charrette hosted by Chattanooga Design Studio at the Downtown Public Library this Monday. The model illustrates the massing and scale of 183 structures in our downtown core. It provides a tangible resource to help participants visualize, explore, and communicate design options for our civic district. We will utilize the model and additional geometric forms for prepared interactive activities relevant to the Downtown.?? ? The model was 3D printed in-house by Ava Peavy, Andrew Edwards, and Zachary Standley, AIA, NCARB using a resin printer. The site was fabricated by FALA Design Studio and accurately depicts the topography and urban fabric of our city.? ? The public design charrette will take place on Monday, August 12th from 4-6 pm on the fourth floor of the Downtown Public Library. We would love for you to come and share your vision for Chattanooga's Civic Center with us and the entire team Sasaki, Erika Roberts, and James Lima Planning + Development.? ? Visit the CDS website to register for the event.
Like all development, urban centers thrive on direction. And the best people to give it direction are members of the local community. Now is the time to create a vision for how the Civic Center District will look and feel in the future. Come out to the Civic Center District charrette on Monday, August 12 from 4:00-6:00 to share your input: https://lnkd.in/eiBeA_6v Learn more on our website: https://lnkd.in/eM3vgrtA
We are grateful to partner with Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority ! Design Your Neighborhood is a stronger program because of this partnership.
CARTA has partnered with the Chattanooga Design Studio and Nashville's Civic Design Center to bring Design Your Neighborhood to Chattanooga! Design Your Neighborhood equips middle school students with the skills to address neighborhood challenges like transportation and affordable housing while fostering awareness and understanding of their surroundings. This initiative features a project-based curriculum that seamlessly integrates into classrooms. The projects align with social and emotional learning as well as STEAM requirements, and each includes a community action component facilitated by staff and volunteers. Currently, Design Your Neighborhood is active in Nashville and Chattanooga, partnering with organizations like the Chattanooga Design Studio with projects focusing on sustainable transportation and transit art! Tyner Middle Academy is the third school CARTA has collaborated with to promote transit art! Students from Howard Connect and East Lake Academy have also contributed beautiful artwork to our bus shelters! Thanks to Ray Bassett of WUTC 88.1 Scenic Roots for helping us to share this message! He makes a great point: “Look at downtown Chattanooga on a map, and there are so many projects - real and potential, public and private - that will reshape the heart of that map for years to come. How will these moving parts on the map fit together?” Listen in to Eric Myers and Ginger Birnbaum to learn about the Civic Center Plan, why it matters, and how you can get involved.
The Studio is leading an urban design and planning process of the Civic Center District alongside an eleven-person-steering committee and a newly engaged consultant team. This is an important juncture due to the expansion of hybrid and remote work and significant planned public and private investments that will impact the experience of the area for generations to come. A collective vision that guides critical opportunities for the future of Chattanooga’s Civic Center is timely. "Downtown is for everyone," Myers said. "Unlike any other neighborhood in Chattanooga, it is the core of our cultural and economic hub of not only the city or downtown but the region. It's especially important right now that we figure out another long-term vision." https://lnkd.in/ePZVciBJ
