Figure just had their "ChatGPT" moment already! If you aren't following this group, you're falling behind! While making coffee isn't the highlight of the 01's capabilities, it's interesting to know that it 'learned' to do so, after only watching a bunch of video demonstrations. It's pretty easy these days to make the business case for robotics - "due to aging population, many countries face labor crisis in key sectors, such as construction, trucking, farming, and retail." So yes, the need is clearly there, but we often only see the front-end of these robotic fleet deployments, i.e., autonomous drone or truck moving and hauling. What about the back-end though? There's a LOT of software running in the background to support that fleet. Curious how those vendors are managing their software releases for solutions that will very well pave the way for so many countries' economic future. We strongly believe in the commercialization potential of humanoid robots. Completing menial labor tasks initially and then growing skill sets to evolve to more complex actions. To get there, it will be challenging and slow, but look at how far humanity has come over the past century. I'm sure those on horseback never imagined the first motor car, let alone that an automobile would one day handle 0-60 mph in less than 3 seconds. Figure's view that "labor is a choice" certainly rings true. If humanoids handle basic labor tasks, imagine the free time you'd have to learn new skills and advance technologies. It could help to level up humanity in its entirety if we saved our time from performing that basic labor. As Brett stated, "the only way out is through", so let's "get out and start building". The future of warehouse distribution is very exciting! The applications for robotics in that sector are extensive. Sure we've seen the robot vacuum style loaders, pickers, and forklifts, which are still very impressive, but with humanoids like Digit, Apollo, and Optimus on the horizon, there are wonderful things in store for how the robotics industry can initiate the next evolution of our society. Imagine a future where Dr. Octavius tells you to relax and that your surgery will be over soon. Well if Ottava passes its FDA testing, that future may not be too distant, though with hopefully less frightening looking robotic arms. Johnson & Johnson MedTech's surgical robotic platform, Ottava, is incredibly impressive on paper and from what we've seen in press releases thus far, could pave the way for the future of surgical procedures. Of course a human will still be present as well, I hope, but it's exciting to think about what operating rooms will look like one day. My hope is also that they perform extensive and constant QA testing on such platforms before they are permitted to work anywhere near my vital organs. While the tech is cool, its capabilities are both exciting and impressive, software for robotics is anything but straightforward. So please, please test your code, ensure it works, and then test again, before pushing it to your fleet that may be responsible for saving lives. If you've ever built software in the robotics space, you've likely lost hair from it or at least turned it gray. How often as software engineers do we have to access one tool to code, only to then switch to another tool to perform one task, then switch to another tool to perform one check, and then switch to yet another tool to do something else? Can't there just be one platform to rule them all? As a robotics software developer, you most certainly feel this pain every single day. Bring the excitement back, and your passion back, by helping your organization to select the proper tools to help you do your work effectively and eliminate all that complexity and legacy approach. Stop tool hopping to do a single task and move to a platform that can automate entire workflows and even integrate with external services that are already a part of your embedded ecosystem.
