Last week, Ryan Richards and I attended the PEI Operating Partners Forum in NYC on behalf of Chassi. Meeting with customers and partners in person is so energizing. I came back with a handful of take-aways, and a deep appreciation for the people we serve and work with… PE Operating leaders are, universally, extremely smart, discerning, and unbelievably busy. Their portfolio companies rely on them for help with: Vendor vetting & procurement Planning and budgeting Change management initiatives Transaction support Fluency on emerging technologies and operating trends Supporting talent and workforce initiatives etc… They juggle strategic, operational, and tactical issues at once, across every stage of the investment lifecycle. They collaborate with the deal team at the fund, portfolio company leadership, and third party providers. They’re pulled in when fires erupt, and they’re looked to as experts who have or can quickly find the answers. It’s a lot. All this is to say, these are impressive people, who are difficult to impress. As a prospective vendor looking to earn their trust, that’s how it should be. Because if somebody makes the wrong bet in this industry, that could be career ending. So while it’s difficult to earn that trust, when it’s there, there’s no better enabler to get things done. In my previous life in the military, I spent years in the special operations community, surrounded by high performing, exacting people, who conducted themselves with unwavering focus and ridiculously high expectations. You cannot fail in this environment. This event reminded me of that environment, and I loved it. Another take-away…it’s been years since I was in town, but the culinary scene in NYC remains absolutely unmatched. I probably gained 6 lbs last week. No regrets though. Thank you Lawrence Dvorchik, Marc Mele and the fantastic team at Private Equity International for hosting such a great event. Can’t wait for the next one.

It’s been a while since you could write this, but...there's some positive news in the PE deal market. EY’s Q2 24’ report highlights some promising trends that the frozen transaction landscape of the last couple years may be thawing. - link in comments - High level: ? Last quarter saw the strongest momentum in years, with 122 deals worth $196B, marking a revival in capital deployment we haven’t seen since Q2 22’. This reflects strategic adaptation amid what has been a persistent valuation gap. Report highlights... Price Shifts - A constant challenge over the last two years, 67% of sellers are lowering prices to align with buyer expectations, while the remaining 33% of buyers and sellers are working to ‘meet in the middle’. This type of collaborative shift is a positive sign that people want to get deals done. Take-privates are increasingly attractive - 30% of the S&P is just six tech stocks! That’s up from 20% four years ago. Strong performing public companies that are overlooked by public market investors offer funds great opportunities. 41 such deals in Q2 doubled the total from Q1, with aggregate value more than $100B - over half of the quarter’s deal value. Focus on Innovation - An increased emphasis on growth-stage investments and AI reflects a long-term vision of value creation. This marks a focus shift away from restructuring and distressed opportunities. Exit activity improving - $113B in total exits through Q2 is an improvement from Q1’s total of $79B, but we’re still well below 21’-22’ levels, as some challenges remain. 78% of GPs cite their hesitancy to exit due to two reasons - they’re waiting for multiples to move higher (47%), or, they’re waiting for portfolio company performance to improve (31%). Positive Market Sentiment - With 73% of GPs surveyed foreseeing heightened activity, the stage is set for a vibrant second half of the year. Ultimately, the market appears to be adjusting to the recent turbulence of the last few years. The funds that stand to win are those who see long-term opportunities coming out of this disruption, and can capitalize on them by focusing on what they control - “namely, the operational value levers that will position their companies to perform as the operating environment continues to stabilize.” #PrivateEquity #StrategicGrowth #AIFuture #InvestmentLandscape #MarketTrends
