He called me after work, his voice heavy with frustration. It wasn’t about the workload or deadlines. He had just left a meeting with his manager. For 30 minutes, his work was criticized without acknowledgment of his efforts. Phrases like, “Even an intern could do this better,” were thrown at him. Not once was he asked for his perspective. By the end, he felt insignificant. That evening, he considered resigning from a job he once cherished. All because one person made him feel undervalued. Months later, he joined a new team under a different leader. On his first day, his new manager invited him for a discussion. He anticipated another critique session. Instead, the manager inquired, “How do you think we can improve this process? I value your insights.” Then, he genuinely listened. He appreciated his ideas and expressed gratitude for his input. This unexpected respect meant a lot to him. For the first time in a long while, he felt truly heard and respected at work. In the following weeks, his confidence soared. He transitioned from dreading meetings to actively contributing. He evolved from feeling inadequate to delivering outstanding projects. Hearing his experience was a poignant reminder of the profound impact leadership can have. A poor manager can diminish an employee’s spirit swiftly. A true leader can uplift and inspire just as quickly. A poor manager will talk down to you. A leader will listen to you and engage in meaningful dialogue. I know which type I aspire to be.
