Today (October 9th) is Ageism Awareness Day! (American Society on Aging) What is ageism? Ageism is the stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination that affects people based on their age, often targeting both younger and older generations, though in different, nuanced ways. Ageism can be a factor in weakened intergenerational bonds, social and geographic isolation, economic and job opportunities, stress, and physical and mental health. Though aging itself is a diverse and unique process, ageism makes it seem flat, lumping an entire generation together. According to the WHO, 50% of people globally hold ageist attitudes against older people. Societally, older adults encounter ageism in subtle ways with things such as "anti-aging" products, negative or "humorous" comments about getting older, and unwarranted "boomer" jokes. More overt examples of ageism may be financial scams or difficulty in finding certain types of specialized care such as geriatric mental health services. The lack of age diversity in many areas of media and daily life can take a toll on self-worth and confidence. How do we combat ageism at Chase Brexton? One of the ways is through our ElderPride Program. ElderPride from The Center for LGBTQ Health Equity offers education, resources, and groups for LGBTQ elders and their informal caregiving networks. Just in time for National Dental Hygiene Month in October, we're so thankful for the recent donation of oral health kits (toothbrush, mouthwash, toothpaste and floss) from Henry Schein! A worldwide supplier of medical and dental supplies, Henry Schein provided 2,000 kits to the National Network of Oral Health Access (NNOHA). That organization held their conference in Baltimore during the last week of September and in turn donated the kits to Chase Brexton so we could distribute them to our patients in all of our sites. Thank you so much to both Henry Schein and NNOHA for their generosity and support of our dental program!
