Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) has taken a significant step in the fight against illicit activities and money laundering along the southwest border of the United States. A new Geographic Targeting Order (GTO) has been issued, requiring money services businesses in 30 ZIP codes across California and Texas to file Currency Transaction Reports (CTRs) with FinCEN for cash transactions at a $200 threshold. This measure aims to combat the threat posed by Mexico-based cartels and other criminal actors, safeguarding the U.S. financial system from significant risks. As part of a comprehensive government approach, the Treasury is leveraging its tools and authorities to identify and counter these criminal activities effectively. The Administration prioritizes stopping drug cartels and the flow of deadly drugs into the U.S. Recently, major Mexico-based drug cartels were designated as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs), further denying them access to the U.S. financial system.
