After a brief hiatus (I am guilty of contributing to the population growth and rapid urbanization we so passionately discuss at Charter Cities Institute), I am excited to be back, and to be joining Students For Liberty at the 2025 Southern African Regional Conference. ? This year’s theme, ‘Youth in Trade: Pioneering AfCFTA's Path to Inclusive Growth’,?is timely given Africa’s demographic profile with more than 60% of the population below age 25. With this huge demographic potential, I am honoured to be giving a keynote speech on ‘Breaking down Trade Barriers: Practical Steps for Increased Regional Integration & Market Access.’ ? With the on-going stark changes to the global order, the urgency of Africa’ economic emancipation has never been greater! I look forward to discussing how the next generation of special economic zones —charter cities—can be a powerful tool for unleashing entrepreneurship, fostering trade and creating the productive jobs young people need [a striking statistic: while 18 million new formal jobs are needed annually to absorb Africa’s new labour market entrants, only only 3 million jobs are currently being created—Mo Ibrahim Foundation]. We need ?bold ideas to chart the path towards the African Union Africa We Want. Thank you African Students For Liberty.
