Charm’s mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO?.

关于我们

Charm Industrial is working to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO?. We design, build and operate a fleet of mobile fast pyrolyzers that convert ag and forest biomass residues into Charm Bio-oil and Charm Biochar for use in permanent carbon removal. At scale, Charm Bio-oil can be used to reduce iron ore into metallic iron to help decarbonize industrial emissions from steelmaking. In 2020, our Chief Scientist and co-founder had a breakthrough to sequester bio-oil that kickstarted the company. Within 10 months we completed our first carbon removal injection and we have completed more than 7,200 tons of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent removal for customers like Stripe, Shopify, JP Morgan and Microsoft. Charm leads the industry with a transparent ledger and helped build a verification model that reduces the risk of over-crediting. Charm isn’t just removing carbon, we’re also improving communities and ecosystems we operate in today. Charm partners with communities to create new jobs, reduce wildfire risk, improve air quality, and safely close abandoned oil wells.

At Charm Industrial, we’re charting a path to produce low-carbon iron—right here in America ???? Our new research demonstrates that the same bio-oil we know and love for carbon removal can be gasified and used to produce pure metallic iron without the need for fossil fuels While we're focused on carbon removal first and foremost, the opportunity to decarbonize heavy industry will have a multiplicative benefit for our climate Read more below ??

?????? ???????????????? ?????????????????? ???????? ???????????????? ???????????? ?????????????? ?????????????????? ???????? ???? 90% ???????? ?? ???????????????? ???????? Picture this: it’s a scorching August day in Kansas. You’ve spent months trying to whip a thick, sticky bio-oil into an injectable state. It’s flowing terribly like thick taffy, even in the heat. Breaking pump after pump. If you’ve ever tried to wrestle a greased-up walrus up a ramp you’ve got an idea of what our lives were like at Charm last summer. As we’ve scaled up operations, we’ve had to tackle the challenge of making bio-oil flow smoothly. We tested a range of solutions, from refining our manufacturing methods to experimenting with complex multi-pump setups at the wellhead. But the best solution turned out to be the simplest…the shortest…and the slippiest. Full story in the comments ????

This week, a 25% tariff went in place for all steel imports into the US American domestic iron production is ~50 million tonnes. We can produce *all of that* from 30 million tonnes of bio-oil...using excess biomass from US forest health and agricultural operations. Learn how the Charm Industrial team — led by Principal Scientist in Metallurgy Brian Jamieson — is forging a path to enable low-cost US domestic green steel in the decades to come????

Ironmaking for steel is a full 8% of global emissions, and is considered a "hard to abate" emissions source by many. A year ago Calvin French-Owen challenged me to make fossil-free iron in my back yard using bio-oil in just 4 days. I laughed at him: making iron isn't like making software. What a hardware n00b. But then I took him seriously for a minute. And it turns out Amazon has propane furnaces available next-day. Ditto crucibles. And ditto iron ore sold as pigment. Also, I know a little place named Charm Industrial where I could snag some bio-oil. That's the full shopping list to try to make iron, so to hell with it, let's do it! It ended up taking a few weeks of experimentation. You gotta get the right bake time (faster than you'd think!), you gotta get the right temperature curve (hot fast, but not too hot), and you need the right ratio of bio-oil and iron ore (just guess-and-check across an order of magnitude!) But—and you're not going to believe this—this janky little backyard setup produces 90%+ metallic iron! Verified and repeated by third party labs thanks to Brian Jamieson, our Principal Metallurgist at Charm. Commercial processes yield 92-95%. Now, it's not a scalable process as-is by any stretch of the imagination. And, so back at Charm we're comparing it with other established ironmaking processes that could be modified to run on bio-oil as well. The backyard-inspired version will probably lose on sheer inefficiency. But we learned a lot. And Calvin's point still stands, despite my initial mockery: at least sometimes, you can try novel industrial processes for carbon mitigation right in your own back yard.

Today we at Charm Industrial are excited to announce a new 100,000 tonne carbon removal purchase from Google. This expanded partnership is the largest biochar purchase of all-time and takes advantage of Charm's unique polygeneration approach to carbon removal.? We lovingly referring to it as the "Charm Duo" ?? — the combo of Charm Bio-oil + Biochar. Our pyrolysis process is highly carbon efficient: every 1 tonne of dry biomass Charm produces 0.2 tonnes of biochar and 0.5 tonnes of bio-oil (≈1 tCO?e total), using 70% of the available carbon. We've focused on scaling our Bio-oil sequestration pathway to date and will continue to do so. But new studies on biochar’s permanence and the impressive Isometric Biochar Protocol have compelled us to add Charm Biochar to our offering alongside Charm Bio-oil sequestration. Bio-oil & biochar each have different benefits and attributes: bio-oil can be sequestered in geologic formations, ensuring storage for millennia, while biochar has soil health & ecosystem benefits, and has demonstrated durability >200 years. Today's partnership with Google demonstrates the speed required for companies to get to net zero and validates the need for the Charm Duo ?? Links & press coverage in the comments below!

Report Launch: A more scaled carbon removal industry could employ 130,000 Americans in the coming decade, according to a new Rhodium Group analysis. This employment would be lasting and geographically spread across the United States. The report shows that carbon removal is not only a critical climate solution, but has the potential to be a triple-winner for the United States — helping us meet our climate goals, bring in-demand jobs to communities across the U.S., and grow our economy. “The report confirms that as new carbon removal centers come online they will require the skills and expertise of American workers,” said Giana Amador, executive director of the Carbon Removal Alliance. “Employment opportunities in carbon removal will be geographically spread across the United States, and many of these jobs will be well suited for workers previously employed in the mining or oil and gas industries, whose experience can be utilized for carbon removal operations.” Read the full report ?? https://lnkd.in/eMtNC2tu

I'd just gotten home from a day in the field when I got a call from our injection operations manager: frigid Kansas winter temperatures had chilled and phase separated bio-oil sitting in storage tanks. All bets were off as to whether we could warm it up and re-homogenize, or if we were going to have a 20 tonne block of solid carbon. It's been a fun year of... interesting challenges and major milestones. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/g3hqaW8S

I’m excited to share news from Wren’s project partner,?Charm Industrial. ?? Carbon removal is critical for combating the climate crisis, yet we’ve achieved less than 0.13% of CDR.fyi’s target of removing 10 billion tonnes of carbon globally by 2050. ?? That’s why we're proud to support industry leaders like Charm Industrial, which converts?biomass residuals—such as material from wildfire thinning—into carbon-rich bio-oil and injects it deep underground for secure carbon storage. ?? The Wren community has raised over $120,000 for Charm Industrial, in subscriber contributions and a donation match campaign, to help fund its operations, and we've raised over $2.9 million for permanent carbon removal initiatives in total. ?? At Wren, we conducted extensive due diligence on Charm Industrial (with invaluable insight provided by Myron Lam back in 2023 ?? ) and were confident in its impact. But, we’re thrilled that Charm recently earned an ‘A’ rating from BeZero Carbon,?a significant milestone in building trust in the voluntary carbon market. ???? Another key milestone is the delivery of Charm Industrial’s first-ever Isometric-verified carbon credits. Isometric?set the requirements for Charm Industrial's process with their Bio-oil Protocol, conducted monitoring, reporting, and verification, and issued credits corresponding to?the total carbon removal. ?? Carbon removal initiatives often have long lead times, with credit delivery taking several years. That’s why we’re excited that Charm Industrial has already delivered credits equivalent to more than 100 tonnes of carbon removal. ?? At Wren, we're looking forward to seeing what’s next for this carbon removal innovator. #CarbonRemoval #Sustainability #Pyrolysis #CarbonCredits
