The artists in this show don’t just illustrate a concept; they challenge us to confront the realities of power, agency, and self-determination in ways that are urgent and deeply human..” - Meredith Connelly, Curator of?Sovereign: Honoring Bodily Autonomy Charlotte’s art scene is taking a bold stand in the national debate over personal rights with?Sovereign: Honoring Bodily Autonomy. Once again, local curator?Meredith Connelly, known for her thought-provoking shows?Not In Repose?(2022) and?UBOUND?(2023), has gathered work that adds perspective to a timely and critical national conversation. This new exhibition opens March 6 and runs until April 12. LINK: https://lnkd.in/ePpNFHyt COLLECTED WORK FROM MORE THAN 53 ARTISTS In assembling?Sovereign, Connelly and her team selected?53 artists?out of over 130 submissions to challenge conventional ideas of identity and self-determination through their work. More than 45 of the artists are based in North Carolina, 40 of whom are local to Charlotte. The final selection of work addresses the theme of bodily autonomy through a diverse array of creative disciplines, including video, tech art, projections, large-scale photography, edible art and more. Art will extend beyond the gallery walls, including installations in unexpected spaces like the stairway and even a bathroom. On the night of the opening, Charlotte-based artist,?Rebecca Lipps, will project art on the facade of McColl Center, as she did during Charlotte SHOUT! in 2023. A RESONATING THEME Set against the backdrop of a time when even basic authority over one’s own body is under scrutiny, the exhibition examines the vital importance of personal agency through a wide range of contemporary art. The collection invites visitors to reconsider what it means to claim control over one’s body at a moment when civil rights are being debated at the highest levels. Doris Kapner, projects director at McColl, agrees. “McColl Center champions artists who push boundaries and engage with critical issues like bodily autonomy and civil rights. Invite them to get to know you. ? Invite yourself to get to know them. ? Invite people to your shows. ? Invite people to coffee or a Zoom. You’d be amazed what can happen in just five minutes.? Invite people to work with you. ? Invite them to walk with you. ? And —MOST OF ALL—invite people to attend events WITH YOU. ? ? Invite them to meet your friends. Invite them into the creative community. ? ? And, don’t forget to invite yourself …. Invite yourself to take chances, meet your heroes.? Invite yourself to remember they are human like you. Invite yourself to remember that YOU are human, too.? ? Invite yourself to go places you’ve never been. Invite yourself to be uncomfortable and grow, grow, grow in the year ahead. And, invite others to go on the journey with you, even if it’s only a few steps at a time.

MERT WILKINSON SELECTED FOR MCCOLL CENTER MINI-RESIDENCY ? Meredith “Mert” Wilkinson has a new “work home.” ? Last week, Wilkinson—a Charlotte-based photographer and visual artist—secured a coveted spot in the McColl Center studio, where she’ll work through March 2025. This mini-residency is funded by Charlotte Is Creative’s H.U.G. Micro-Grant program.? SPACE, TOOLS & COMMUNITY ? For the past three years, Charlotte Is Creative has partnered with McColl Center to fund four-month residencies for local artists. Wilkinson succeeds multimedia artist Madison Foss, the most recent occupant of this studio.? ? “I’m excited to continue my work in this beautiful space and look forward to the community I’m becoming a part of,” Wilkinson shared.? ? Wilkinson will have free workspace, access to labs, tools, and resources, and, most importantly, a vibrant creative community in the McColl studios.?

SHERRY WATERS STRUCK BY A BOLTS OF INSPIRATION ? At the October CreativeMornings/CLT gathering, Sherry Waters, founder of The Pauline Tea Bar Apothecary (https://lnkd.in/egnDgTf3 was a “Bolt of Inspiration” award from Charlotte Is Creative. This award, sponsored by University of North Carolina at Charlotte and The Savage Way, is presented each month to individuals for their significant, ongoing support of our local creative community. Get to know more about Sherry below. SHERRY WATERS The Pauline Tea Bar Apothecary Sherry cultivates peaceful, creative havens across Charlotte through her two Pauline Tea Bar locations -- Arty Avenue (in the Camp Greene community) and Beatties Ford Road (near the former Excelsior Club). These purpose-driven spaces welcome reflection and artistic expression. Her unwavering support of local artists through performances, exhibitions and workshops has made her a cornerstone of the Charlotte creative community.? What inspired you to create The Pauline Tea Bar Apothecary? It was always my dream to create a space where people could connect with themselves, their creativity, and each other. The concept grew out of a desire to offer a peaceful refuge—a place where community could be built through shared experiences and quiet reflection. How does art play a role in the spaces you've created? Art has always been integral to what we do. Whether it’s visual art, performance, or music, we want to ensure that our spaces encourage creative expression. Artists have the power to transform environments and inspire deeper thought, and we are proud to provide a platform for them. You’ve recently opened a third location. What’s the vision behind it? Our newest location (1017 Beatties Ford Road) builds on the foundation we’ve set, but it also expands into new areas. It’s more than just a tea bar—it’s a hub for creativity, wellness, and personal growth. I’m excited to continue supporting artists and the wider community through this new space. What advice would you give to creatives looking to find their own place in the world? I always tell people to stay true to themselves.
