Sadly, this case of debeaking is just an extreme example of what happens to hens in the egg industry. From the moment they are born, chicks have their beaks clipped. The justification given is that they peck and injure each other if left intact but how is that surprising when these beings are crammed by the thousands in warehouses, with only the personal space equivalent of a sheet of printer paper. Similar mutilation is done to turkey beaks and talons, cattle horns, pig tails and teeth, and sheep tails. Every aspect of their lives and bodies are controlled. This is why we advocate for our animal residents and for the transition towards a plantbased agricultural system. Because nobody deserves this.

Farmed animals have been selectively bred to produce more of whatever humans want to take from them, and, since the pigs in this group were all rescued from the meat industry, they have been bred to grow much larger and faster than their ancestors did. They are prone to weight gain, and excessive weight can lead to joint pain, cracked hooves, and many other issues. We make sure the pigs get lots of exercise and eat plenty of healthy foods, and we weigh them regularly to keep track. Looks like they're all doing great!!
