Several years ago, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration personnel used CAPT PICARD—our system designed to measure cognitive workload during training and real-world tasks—to collect data from 20 astronaut-like subjects who participated in testing at NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC). The evaluation took place at the Interface Rapid Prototyping Laboratory (RPL) using an Orion-like workstation, featured in the How To Fly Orion video. Led by Dr. Bethany K. Bracken as Principal Investigator, the research team designed CAPT PICARD to assess cognitive workload in real time. E. Vincent Cross II, PhD (currently a Senior Scientist, but who was working at JSC previously) assisted with data collection. During testing, participants performed procedural tasks such as responding to malfunctions and monitoring shuttle launches, all while connected to fNIRS Pioneer biosensors that tracked brain activity. Through this research, CAPT PICARD demonstrated its ability to accurately assess cognitive workload—an important step in optimizing training and performance for high-stakes environments. We're thrilled to have worked with the same workstation that NASA astronauts will use on Artemis II, the first crewed flight of Orion to the Moon, scheduled for April of 2026. https://ow.ly/tAYN50V7OT4 CAPT PICARD: https://lnkd.in/e-hm5D5Y fNIRS Pioneer Biosensors: https://lnkd.in/eikX68vY #AI #CognitiveWorkload #HumanPerformance #NASA #fNIRS #AerospaceInnovation
