#Nonprofit Myth #5: Once you file for tax exempt (sometimes nicknamed 501c3 status) with the IRS, your organization will never have to pay any type of taxes. Not quite! Mergers can actually be incredibly healthy for nonprofit organizations. In fact, in one study, 88% of nonprofit leaders felt their nonprofit was actually better at achieving organizational goals and increasing their impact after the merger! #Nonprofit Myth #2: If there's a recession, nonprofits that thrive need to cut expenses as much as humanly possible. Not so! The organizations that thrive during recessions know that it's about balance-- cutting back on programs that are draining the organization and pouring more into programs that help the organization thrive. Head's up! There's a donation scam that's been targeting nonprofit organizations nationwide. The scam involves sending a check as a "donation" to the nonprofit, then claiming they "overpaid" how much they were going to donate so the nonprofit sends them money back. In reality, the original check bounces a few days later and nonprofits are losing thousands this way.
