?? POEM OF THE MONTH ?? "Leisure" by W. H. Davies W. H. Davies was a Welsh poet and writer, who spent much of his life in the U.K. and the U.S. He became one of the most popular poets of his time. His themes included observations on life's hardships and the ways the human condition are reflected in nature. "Leisure" first appeared in Davies's 1911 collection, Songs of Joy and Others. The speaker argues that a life without leisure is really no life at all. Excessive "care" (anxiety, worries, and general busyness) threatens to distract people from the beauty of the world, and the poem encourages readers to slow down and appreciate the natural wonders that exist all around them. "Leisure" celebrates the joy and importance of relaxation while also painting a vivid picture of the natural world. Nature isn't in a hurry or 'full of care' in the same way that people so often are, the poem implies, and nature's beauty can be a balm to the anxious soul.

With great sadness, we share the Boston Globe obituary of Henry Lee who passed away on Monday at the age of 99. Henry maintained a lifelong membership in the Charitable Irish Society. He served multiple terms on the Board and was Past President in 1980. He carried on the legacy of his cousin, Henry Lee Shattuck, who served as Society Treasurer for many years and was the donor in 1940 of the endowment, in the name of the Society, which created the Chair for Celtic Studies at Harvard University. The participation of true "Boston Brahmins" in the affairs of the Society is a tradition dating back to the early days of its founding. Henry was a genial, courtly gentleman with a great sense of humor. He will be missed by all who knew him and by those who benefited from his long service to the Boston community. ??
