Over the past decade, opioid misuse among adolescents has escalated alarmingly. In 2014, approximately 6% of teenagers aged 12 to 17 reported abusing prescription opioids. By 2023, this figure surged to 15%, with 574,000 teens misusing opioids—a 41% increase from the previous year. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid up to 100 times more potent than morphine, has significantly contributed to this crisis. Alarmingly, fentanyl is responsible for 20% of deaths among California's teenagers and young adults aged 15 to 24. These trends underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions to protect our youth from the dangers of opioid misuse. Traditional antidepressants help many, but they aren’t always effective—up to 30% of people with depression don’t find relief with medication alone. Even for those who do, side effects can be challenging. That’s where Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) comes in. TMS is an FDA-approved, non-invasive treatment that offers significant relief to individuals with treatment-resistant depression. Unlike medications, TMS works by stimulating brain areas linked to mood regulation—without systemic side effects. 83% of patients who complete TMS treatment feel that their depressive symptoms have improved, and 62% of patients report a full remission (virtual absence) of all depression symptoms! If depression medications haven’t worked for you, TMS could be the breakthrough you need. Learn more at charakcenter.com

March 14th (3.14) is Pi Day, celebrating the famous mathematical constant! But let’s talk about another kind of pie—the kind that brings comfort and joy. Did you know that certain desserts can boost mental health? Treats like pie can trigger dopamine release, lifting your mood when enjoyed in moderation. Sharing dessert with loved ones can also strengthen connections and reduce stress. In contrast, this is also part of the reason that stress can lead to weight gain—as we form subconscious associations to the sweets and our improved happiness. So, celebrate Pi Day guilt-free, perhaps with a pie! But remember, balance is key to a happy, healthy mind!

March 10th (yesterday) is all about Mario (Mar.10), one of gaming’s most beloved icons! Video games bring joy, creativity, and even stress relief. However, too much screen time can negatively impact mental health. Excessive gaming may lead to sleep issues, increased anxiety, and social withdrawal. To maintain balance, set time limits, take breaks, and engage in other fulfilling activities like exercise or socializing. Gaming should enhance life, not replace it. If video games are affecting your mental well-being, Charak Center for Health and Wellness can help you find healthier habits while still enjoying the games you love. Play smart, stay well!
