It's story time. We were looking for a new lawyer and the "leading" firm in my area started my initial phone call with "So, I'll put {husband's name} as the primary contact..." I paused for a moment, trying to decide if this was worth being annoyed about, and then, I said "Wait a minute. I'm the one calling you. I'm the primary earner. I'm a business owner. And I'll be the one handling any paperwork. Why would you put my husband as the primary contact? If you call my husband, he'll just hand the phone to me." The (female) receptionist blamed "the system" and said, "that's just how we do things." I decided to set my pride aside and meet with the lawyer any way because he's supposedly "the best." To absolutely no one's surprise, as the owner of the firm, his behavior echoed the same misogynist micro-aggressions. He addressed my husband first and primarily spoke to him when we sat in his office. I had the same kind of interaction many years ago when trying to sell a house. I asked the (male) realtor some questions about the process. In response, he asked me if my husband was around. This is why I've decided to focus my work on female founders. Women are dramatically underrepresented in VC investments - we know that - but we are also constantly facing micro-aggressions from investors, co-founders, subordinates, customers, other professionals, random strangers on the street... ??Female founders need a different kind of coach.??
