In Snowflake schema, dimensions are clustered around fact tables, which in turn are linked to other sub-dimension tables. 1. Data is normalized in Snowflake schema because of which there is : a. less redundancy of data, b. Requires less disk space and hence less storage costs. c. It is easier to maintain/update data and there is less risk of corrupted data due to no redundancy. 2. Solves write/update slowdowns. Disadvantages are: 1. Involves more complex queries/joins. 2. Has less performance on datamarts/cubes as compared to Star schema. Based on business needs, if frequent updates are present in a datawarehouse and storage is concerned then opt for Snowflake schema.

You can have the best of both, if you separate storage and use in your own mind. Having a granular snowflake schema and developing some key star schema dimensions on top for your end users. The trade off with a modern data stack is minimal, and with improvements in observability you will be able to track which snowflake schema dimensions your users are joining together most often.

Some of the things that should taken into consideration during this: 1. Being clear about your master data and transactional data. 2. Understanding KPIs & business requirement clearly. 3. Understanding source data tables and their relations, for example in servicemax we have Id as primary key for each tables & these are generally lookup data type and also there is picklist data type, both these picklist and lookup data type fields should have their respective description otherwise you'll face a lot of complexity creating data models(we can use seed files if we are using dbt with snowflake dwh). 4. Types of load that you are going to perform incremental or delta 5. Finding, creating and using pk, fk, surrogate key, loaded_at fields. etc etc

There are requirements related to tools as well like say MSTR which works best with snowflake schema.. Snowflaking makes more sense when you have fact tables across different hierarchies like at date and month level both so snowflaking date and month dimentions will be required... Like for tableau or Qlik a Star schema is better suited. From DB design perspective performance and storage cost considerations will drive the way your DW is designed.

It is always better to use star schema only which is the ideal case. However, practically we have to combine Snowflake and star schema. This offers flexibility and scalability, but requires complex queries. There are also other approaches, such as Data Vault. The approach to data modeling in the DWH should not be taken lightly.
