Experiencing #gratitude correlates with better #health. " . . . experiencing more grateful affect was associated with lower mortality. Individuals in the highest tertile of gratitude, compared with the lowest tertile, had a 9% lower hazard of deaths from any cause, after accounting for baseline sociodemographic characteristics, social participation, religious involvement, physical health, lifestyle factors, cognitive function, and mental health." https://lnkd.in/gykp-4nX

Love this creative idea for raising awareness of #ageism: "It [ageism] thrives in a world where youth is seen as the norm and successful ageing means not ageing at all. Few people are aware of this, even at Maastricht University, says Swinnen; we’ve internalised it. To challenge this, a playful campaign was launched in which students and staff wear T-shirts bearing stereotypes that don’t match their age. For example, someone in their fifties might wear a shirt that says, “I’m young and innovative” while a young tutor might wear one saying, “I am old and blocking your promotion”. The goal is to spark conversations in tutorials or during coffee breaks, with the aim of contributing to a more age-friendly university." #MondayMotivation - Think about other creative ideas to change our narrative about aging. https://lnkd.in/gkQ9EgJx

"Age may be inappropriately influencing a patient's care if the medical provider: - Has low expectations about what an older patient can do just because of their age - Is less likely to recommend a treatment because of a patient's age - Does not offer, or restricts, information about possible medical treatments - Shows little interest in, or appears bored by, an older patient's questions or interests - Decides that screening or further treatments aren't worthwhile solely because of age - Assumes that with advanced age, a patient is likely to be cognitively impaired or gives over-simplified answers or explanations" https://lnkd.in/gGHZvZax #ageism #healthcare

So much meat in this thorough article by Elizabeth White. #Older #Black #Women face a unique set of compounding life experiences. Detailing this helps us understand what needs to be done systemically to deal with the impact of #ageism added to other factors, from #soloaging to a lifetime of dealing with sexism and racism. "The conventional perspective on work and retirement needs to evolve. Retirement is no longer a one-time event, or a one-way exit. The needs and circumstances of those still seeking employment at age 60 are very different from those exiting the workforce. Older Black women, in many respects, are the test case for policy-makers and age-solution advocates. Being among the most vulnerable older adults, Black women are an early warning of a broader crisis on the horizon. Prioritizing their needs and access to resources and support such as retraining and upskilling programs for better jobs with benefits could serve as a model for addressing other vulnerable groups." https://lnkd.in/gXb5hTyF

According to the article, "Google trends data?shows that searches for “#perimenopause”?started rising in late 2022 and jumped up again in early 2024, with no sign of slowing down." #Menopause is all of a sudden not an unspoken word. #Women are tired (literally and figuratively) of keeping quiet and, then, when asking for help, discovering that medical providers may not have training. Right now, it can feel like the Wild West out there. There are plenty of influencers, celebrities and people with medical credentials working to create awareness, but also plenty vying for attention and a share of the market. It's time for some serious investment in good research to help us live better and stop suffering in silence. Here's to raising our voices! What do you think? https://wapo.st/3O2Er0i

#MondayMotivation Let's stop doing this! "I knew the candidate was about my age or a little older based on her impressive resume filled with roles at top-tier companies dating back to the early 2000s. She possessed an even more impressive portfolio and was a delight to chat with—she clearly knew her stuff. But then, after we’d been speaking for about 20 minutes, she did something that I have begun to notice is so incredibly common for people my age and older that we often don’t even register that we’re doing it. Referring to a particularly impressive accomplishment, this candidate laughed ruefully and said, “I know I’m dating myself here, but…” In that instant, she completely reframed the conversation. Instead of leaning into the impressiveness of the project and what value she could bring to us as an experienced pro, she painted herself as outdated." #internalizedageism https://lnkd.in/grhTTwCr
