I will not be "errorgant". I will take what I hear as opinion and not necessarily as fact. Whether I agree or disagree, other people's opinions are still just opinions. I don't allow their opinions to affect my mood, moral self-esteem, or self-confidence. I must remember that I have so many filters and biases (conscious and unconscious), that I must take a step back before I pass along an opinion as a fact. I challenge the quality of my thinking and the thinking of others. I keep my opinions to myself until I can ensure I provide honest and unbiased thoughts and facts. I am always entitled to my own opinion, but I am not entitled to my own facts. Cheers John

People stay when they feel connected. When I got out of school, I worked for a company that didn’t instill a sense of belonging. A family member owned that company. Even though I was related to the owner, I never had a sense of belonging. His attitude toward me was, “I’m going to pick on you because I know you won’t quit. Keeping you in line will keep everyone else in line.” So, I became the scapegoat with a Master’s degree. I worked there for a few years and realized I definitely didn’t want to work in that kind of environment. I learned over time that if you build an organization where people feel connected, trusted, and valued, they will stay. If you build an organization where people don’t feel like that, they will leave. The only people who will stay are those who feel they have no other choice. They don’t have any opportunity to go anywhere else. Ending up with a company full of people who are only there because they can’t find other work isn’t going to be overly productive or positive. Does that make sense?? Hit reply. I’d love to know. My excerpt from the book:? “People Come First The New Business Model”?

Being willing and open to change is about facing our fears, giving up controlling behavior, and focusing on the success of others. It’s important to keep learning, persevering, and connecting. Willingness brings about honesty, self-awareness, and open-mindedness. Businesses are built on the success of the people. Planning is helpful if you work on making sure that people are ready for the planning. Otherwise, all you end up with is a lot of resentment. When you focus on your people, all other issues tend to resolve themselves.

Taking action can be irritating and fearful. When we take action, life changes. It's not about waiting to develop a skill set. Working with clients, I often hear, "Well, maybe if I just did this? Maybe if I just did that?" My response is, "Okay, well, let's start with that". Initially, taking action can be pretty irritating. I remember a woman who attended one of my workshops. The following morning, she approached me and said, 'I'm very upset with you.'? I said, "Why would that be?" And she said, "Well, you got me out of bed at 4:30 am this morning'. I said, "I'm sorry. How did I do that?" She said, "I normally wake up at 4:30, but I usually roll over and go back to sleep. Today, I heard you in my head talking about taking action to create change. So you made me get up, go to the gym, work out, have a nice breakfast, and get to work early. I got all of my work done. And now I'm here, feeling very resentful about the fact that I had to get up at 4:30". This is an excellent example of one of those paradoxes in life. We don't want to do certain things, even things that will have positive outcomes. The following is one of my excerpts from our book "People Come First: The New Business Model" with coauthors @Amb Terry Earthwind Nichols, his wife and business partner @Linda Vettrus-Nichols, and @Jenny Landgren.
