    Should you look at your competitors as a marketer? I think so. Should marketing own it? It depends. Olivier Milcent and I just wrapped up the first version of our TechMarketingLeaders book chapter on competitive intelligence. It will be submitted to the publisher next week. Here are some of our key ideas & takeaways, would you add anything? ?? ?? Competitive intelligence is essential for refining marketing product & sales strategies??, particularly to (re)define your unique value proposition and have a clear positioning ?? ?? It is less relevant to look at competition when you create a Blue Ocean (new category), much more when you swim in a Red Ocean (mature, competitive category) ?? ?? Organize regular "Competition Reviews" with key stakeholders (exec team, sales team, product team...) to keep everyone informed?. It can be in a weekly all hands, or in a dedicated strategy meeting ?? ?? Battle cards synthesize competitive insights for sales teams??. Win/loss interviews provide valuable customer insights & competitive comparisons?. Always learn from the market ?? ?? Competitive analysis should challenge and elevate your marketing game, because you encourage a culture of curiosity & humility?? internally and among your vendors ?? ?? What tools are most useful? We recommend the free basics like LinkedIn or Google Alerts, but also paying subscriptions to Pappers, ChangeTower, Semrush or Ahrefs. If you have budget, consider investing in analyst relations like Gartner, Forrester or IDC. But here's the provocative question: Are we obsessing too much over our competitors? ?? While keeping tabs on the competition is crucial, remember this quote from Edward de Bono: "Companies that focus solely on competition will die. Those that focus on value creation for customers will thrive."? So, marketers, where do you stand? Is competitive analysis a critical tool in your arsenal or a distraction from true innovation?     One of the first rules of trying to make predictions about Google search and advertising decisions is - don't do it. But we're going to. The company has famously made significant changes seemingly on a whim in the past, and it's more likely than not that the future is one of more (unpleasant) surprises than one easily foreseen.     I didn’t know it at the time, but RSVPify 1.0 was built by a 17-year-old high school kid in Bosnia. ?? Sanil Musi? and I first connected on what was then ODesk back in 2013. Sanil was wary of chatting by voice or video, and we communicated primarily through email and messaging. After 6 months of building mutual trust and growing an unlikely friendship, the reason for Sanil’s aversion to contemporary forms of communication was clear. He revealed on our first live call that he was just 17, and balancing my project and several others with…being a high school kid! 11 years, 2 startups, and countless mutual trials and tribulations later, Sanil is a kid no longer, and remains an incredible friend, colleague and one of our most talented engineers. Next month, Sanil will finalize his transition from spending most of his waking hours on RSVPify to building ChangeTower’s future full-time as the company’s Co-Founder and CTO. ?? The Bosnian people are some of the most amazing, intelligent and enduring people on the planet. I’m elated that the Balkans have become a second home for us and a seemingly limitless fountain of talent and energy for our teams at RSVPify and ChangeTower!
