We use urban art to create awareness about mass shootings and make changes through education, conversation, and activism
关于我们
On February 14, 2018, a gunman opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 people and injuring 17 others. Change the Ref was founded by Manuel & Patricia Oliver, the parents of Joaquin "Guac" Oliver, one of the 17 lost in the tragedy. Change The Ref (CTR), was created to empower our future leaders by providing the tools needed to make changes through education, conversation, and activism. It uses urban art and nonviolent creative confrontation to expose the disastrous effects of the mass shooting pandemic. Founded in the memory of their son Joaquin (Guac), Manuel and Patricia Oliver are committed to making sure that their son’s life and the lives of other victims of gun violence are never forgotten, and that real change happens to prevent tragedies like this from happening ever again.

Yesterday we joined Stop Handgun Violence, Louis D. Brown Peace Institute and other GVP partners for an incredible Change the Ref event at Boston City Hall. This event, led by Patricia and Manuel Oliver, the parents of Parkland shooting victim Joaquin Oliver, was a powerful call to action against gun violence in America. It also marked the opening of The Gun Violence Memorial Project in Boston, which features remembrance objects of victims, including Joaquin and Boston-area community members whose loved ones contributed objects at Peace Institute collection events over the summer. The Gun Violence Memorial Project is open now though the end of January 2025 at three locations throughout Boston - Boston City Hall, Institute of Contemporary Art Boston in Seaport, and the MASS Design Group Office in South End

Between 2015 and 2022, the presence of firearms in homes underscored a grave risk, with children 17 and under unintentionally causing at least 2,802 shootings. These tragic incidents resulted in 1,083 deaths and 1,815 injuries, predominantly affecting children. Alarmingly, during the same period, at least 895 toddlers and preschoolers found and accidentally discharged firearms, leading to self-inflicted or other injuries. This data highlights the critical dangers associated with keeping guns in the home, especially around young children. #endgunviolence #supportethanslaw #keepkidssafe
