HPC?makes award-winning products from corporate #recycled materials while producing next-generation #regenerative materials for the #circular economy. They are working on #depolymerization and biological funneling of mixed waste plastic. Hamilton Perkins has an impressive track record in business that started with a magazine recycling operation in middle school - unfortunately eventually shut down by the school. However, this setback did not stop his entrepreneurial spirit or his commitment to social impact. He later launched a product on Kickstarter made from recycled plastic bottles and billboards, successfully selling over 50,000 units. Perkins has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company, and The Washington Post. His customers include HP, Ellen, and Affirm. Currently, Perkins is working to commercialize intellectual property that depolymerizes and bio-converts waste streams into circular polymers aka reusable materials, supporting the expanding customer base of the Hamilton Perkins Collection (HPC). Additionally, Perkins was both a finalist and a winner of the 2023 Black Ambition Prize, presented by #Pharrell Williams. He is an alum of the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator and a 2024 LabStart Fellow. Hamilton holds a Bachelor of Science from Old Dominion University's Strome College of Business and an MBA from William and Mary. Perkins serves on the Executive Advisory Council at Old Dominion University's Strome College of Business. He is married, has one son, and resides in Los Angeles, California. We held the September meeting for our Retail Leadership Council (RLC) last week. The topic in focus was change management and how to integrate sustainability into a business; internally as well as externally, down the supply chain. Our key takeaways were as follows: ? Successfully demonstrating that sustainability is part of the value proposition for a retailer and their products is essential for creating sustainability champions within the business as well as when communicating with the supply chain.? ? ? Customers are the most important stakeholders for retailers. By having open, ready dialogue with consumers, their wants and drivers can be leveraged to develop internal frameworks for a retailer's merchandiser teams. ? ? Employing change management frameworks throughout a company can equip their workforce with the necessary tools and awareness to make safe and sustainable chemistry and other sustainability considerations a priority. We are very happy to announce our second start-up of this year's cohort, Soleic Materials who will join us at the Innovators Roundtable coming up in a few weeks (taking place at Nike's HQ campus in Oregon, US between 28-30 October, 2024). We look forward to hearing from Nick Sandland, their Chief Business Officer. Born in 2016 out of research conducted at UC San Diego, Soleic urethane technologies are plant based, low carbon, non-persistent microplastic forming (biodegradable) polymer systems.? The original work involved extracting oils from Algae as precursors of the polyol, but more recently the technology has been expanded to allow use of a variety of plant sources. Soleic has 2 main forms, pourable liquid urethane systems and thermoplastic urethane pellets (TPU). The core technology is built on polyester polyols, but plant based isocyanates are in pilot phase today. The company has numerous patents and peer reviewed scientific papers on the subject. Initial Soleic products are commercially ready for sale and available today, with the portfolio continuing to expand. Soleic is manufactured today by contract manufacturing partners in several locations, but Algenesis is currently designing its own manufacturing facility, which will be located in the USA.?? The primary market focus is #footwear applications, with an additional focus on #textile #coatings, #furniture foam, consumer #electronics and outdoor sporting goods.?? The company has also created its own proof of concept footwear brand, BLUEVIEW Footwear, demonstrating that highly sustainable footwear can be a reality today!
