We are very happy to announce a new webinar series that will explore the importance of collaboration when it comes to the topic of microplastics and highlight some of the innovative work currently taking place to better understand and reduce their long-term adverse impacts. In Part 1 taking place on the 8th October 2024 (10 am EDT, 4pm CET), we are delighted to be joined by speakers from our members Gradient and Dow. From climate change to the adverse effects of forever chemicals, we are facing a number of pressing sustainability issues. These big and global challenges require paradigm shifts to find solutions and will require a move from ‘silo thinking’ to ‘impactful collaboration’. Our founder and executive director Prof. Joel Tickner was invited as a panellist at the 3rd Berlin Forum on #Chemicals and #Sustainability - Implementing the Global Framework on Chemicals virtual event earlier today. This event is hosted by HE Steffi Lemke, German Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection and co-hosted by @Inter-Organization Programme for the Sound Management of Chemicals (#IOMC). Some of the points that Joel has made during the Creating Linkages and Engaging with other Sustainable Development to Enhance Global Framework on Chemicals (#GFC) Implementation session that he was a panellist during were: ? As the chemical industry is capital intensive, rethinking the industry for net zero and lower toxicity will require a decades long transition as well as take massive public-private investments in developing and scaling new safer and more sustainable molecules and manufacturing processes. ? As such, creating clear supply and demand signals, as we have done for renewable energy and now for sustainable aviation fuels, will be needed. ? To address chemical pollution - we really need to learn from the climate playbook - goals, focus on solutions, massive investments, government incentives, business commitments and broad societal education and engagement. ? If we make the incumbent chemistry contributing to chemical pollution more expensive and the innovative sustainable chemistries less expensive, we will be able to accelerate adoption.
