Our US colleagues were off yesterday for Indigenous Peoples' Day, a holiday to honor the history and cultural contributions of indigenous people across the Americas. It dates back to 1992 on the 500th anniversary of Columbus' arrival to the Americas. Indigenous organizers convinced the city of Berkley, California, to declare October 12th as Indigenous Peoples Day. Many cities began following suit and in 2021, Biden issued the first-ever presidential proclamation of Indigenous Peoples' Day. On change.org we see indigenous-led petitions across a variety of topics - from oil pipelines, to missing and murdered indigenous women, to returning ancient artifacts. October 11 was National Coming Out Day, observed in the United States every October 11th since 1988 in order to encourage LGBTQ+ people to be authentically themselves. As the Human Rights Campaign puts it, "Coming out or inviting someone in is a personal choice and is often a significant part of reclaiming this right and living in our identity publicly. The Paralympics came to a close this past weekend, but the journey to Summer 2028 is already on people's mind. Josh Bogle is a Para surfer from California, a U.S. state known for its surfing culture — It’s even the state sport! But despite that, the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles have no plans to include para surfing as a sport, and Josh wants to change that. He has built a coalition of other famous surfers, and celebrities like singer Jack Johnson, to help push for para surfing in LA. Josh is still fighting to make 2028 para surfing a reality, and his petition has now reached more than 26,000 signatures! Josh commented on Instagram: “My optimism has me believing that Para surf is such a rad showcase of athleticism & global sport progress!
