This week, ?COMIT | Center for Ocean Mapping and Innovative Technologies welcomed our project sponsor, NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, and other key partners for our Year Four Program Review in St. Petersburg, FL. As our fifth and final year is underway, we continue to refine more efficient ways to map our ocean and coastal areas and train the next generation of hydrographers. Our work contributes directly to NOAA's ability to respond effectively to coastal disasters and improve coastal preparedness and resilience; crucial public resources that we cannot afford to lose. We shared progress across our priority themes, including: ?? ???????????????? ??????????????: Improving the efficiency of seafloor mapping efforts via advanced technology and processing algorithms. ?? ???????????????? ????????????????????????: Developing tools for high precision measurements of the seafloor in coastal zones. ?? ?????????????? ??????????????????????: Increasing capacity to rapidly respond to coastal impacts and changes. ?? ???????? ???????????????????? ????????????????: Resolving complexity of spatial and temporal scales for hydrodynamic modeling in nearshore environments. ?? ???????????????????????? ??????????????????????:?Capacity building through training modules, certificate programs, graduate coursework, and seminars. ?? ?????????????????? ????????????????: Community engagement via user-ready content and products for the general public and elementary to high school-aged students. At the conclusion of our program, we are further motivated to maintain our high performance and deliver impactful results during our final year. Due to their size and location, Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Sites (ODMDS) are notoriously difficult to survey efficiently. Often a large offshore vessel is required to get to the site safely and survey consistently to obtain coverage across the large area. Woolpert recently leveraged the abilities of an uncrewed vessel to successfully, efficiently, and economically map a large disposal site in the Gulf. By taking advantage of an international workforce, the survey could be conducted with 24/7 monitoring from Woolpert's hydrographic surveyors across the globe. With this proven ability, working with Chance Maritime Technologies we can now complete ODMDS surveys with ease. Equipment included an R2Sonic multibeam sonar, Trimble Applanix POS MV and AML Oceanographic Ltd. SVs. #ODMDS #USV #hydrographicsurvey

Last week, the COMIT | Center for Ocean Mapping and Innovative Technologies at University of South Florida College of Marine Science (USF-CMS) partnered with Chance Maritime Technologies for a cutting-edge field operation in support of one of the Center's research projects. Operating "over the horizon" with Chance Maritime's latest uncrewed surface vessel (#USV), the LR30, COMIT researchers were able to acquire valuable multi-beam and split-beam data at three offshore locations to aid the Center's efforts to establish backscatter calibration sites near #TampaBay. ??? One of our labs was swiftly transformed into a 24/7 command center, with numerous monitors displaying real-time information to the Chance Maritime USV pilots and COMIT #sonar operators via low Earth orbit satellite communications. Other personnel from USF-CMS were invited to observe the operations in person and could also access a live stream of the #data #acquisition in progress. ?? The data collection was highly successful, concluding nearly a full day ahead of schedule thanks to favorable weather conditions and around-the-clock staffing by COMIT and Chance Maritime.
