STRIKE UPDATE: The major U.S. dockworkers' union, the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), and the United States Maritime Alliance have reached a tentative wage agreement, effectively ending a strike that had significantly disrupted operations at East Coast and Gulf Coast ports since Tuesday. This strike had a considerable impact on U.S. supply chains, delaying goods and increasing shipping costs. The existing contract has been extended until January 15, 2025, to allow time for the resolution of any outstanding issues. Under the new agreement, a wage increase of 61.5% over six years has been agreed upon. We hope that this resolution will restore stability and efficiency to our shipping operations and alleviate the recent challenges faced by the industry.

Dockworkers at 36 major ports along the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts have initiated a strike as of today, October 1st. This work stoppage could severely disrupt the nation’s supply chain, leading to higher prices and delays for consumers and businesses. The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) cites ongoing disputes with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) as the reason for the strike. The ILA had announced preparations for this potential strike if a new agreement was not reached by September 30th. The affected ports include major hubs such as: - New York/New Jersey - Savannah - Charleston - Houston - Miami - Port Everglades Additionally, this could result in major congestion at West Coast ports. Some carriers have already begun rerouting vessels to avoid potential delays or disruptions at the impacted ports, which could lead to longer transit times and additional costs. A number of ocean carriers have also preemptively announced surcharges ahead of anticipated disruptions. This situation is evolving rapidly, and we will continue to monitor the strike and provide updates. Champion will keep our clients advised of any specific shipments affected by this incident.
