  • Updates from the National Endowment for the Arts?(Released on 2/6/25) The National Endowment for the Arts is updating its?FY 2026?grant guidelines, with deadlines in March and July 2025. These changes impact organizations applying in the?Challenge America and Grants for Arts Projects categories; please see below for pertinent details. CHALLENGE AMERICA The Challenge America opportunity is?canceled for FY 2026. Organizations that have applied or were planning to apply to the FY 2026 Challenge America grant opportunity are encouraged to apply to the Grants for Arts Projects category at the March or July deadlines instead. This change is to focus NEA staff resources on the Grants for Arts Projects category. GRANTS FOR ARTS PROJECTS?(GAP) The National Endowment for the Arts is revising the FY 2026 Grants for Arts Projects guidelines and they will be available on?arts.gov/grants?no later than?Monday, February 10, 2025. As part of these changes, the February 13, 2025, Grants for Arts Projects deadline has been canceled.?The FY 2026 deadlines are now March 11, 2025, for GAP 1 and July 10, 2025, for GAP 2.?Organizations that have already submitted an application must submit a?new application?under one of these deadlines. Under the updated guidelines, the NEA continues to encourage projects that celebrate the nation’s rich artistic heritage and creativity by honoring the Semiquincentennial of the United States of America (America250).?Funding priority will be given for projects that take place in 2026-2027 that celebrate and honor the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.?This can include incorporating an America250-related component or focus within a larger project. Additional changes to the Grants for Arts Projects guidelines include a requirement for applicants to have completed a?five-year history?of arts programming prior to the application deadline. If arts programming was suspended due to the pandemic, applicants may include examples that occurred in 2018 or 2019 to meet the five-year requirement. Do not include examples prior to 2018. • Below is a great opportunity to learn more about how nonprofits are impacted by the current Executive Actions. ??

Free webinar from the National Council of Nonprofits: Executive Actions and Their Impact on Charitable Nonprofits ?? The last couple weeks have been a whirlwind for many nonprofits, from the more than 100 Executive Orders (EOs) issued by President Trump to the confusion about the funding freeze ordered in a memo from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). While a judge granted an Administrative Stay in the case filed by the National Council of Nonprofits and others, and OMB rescinded the memo, the EOs are still in effect, and charitable nonprofits with federal grants are still feeling the impact of these decisions. Join this free webinar on Friday, February 7 at 3 p.m. ET?to learn more about EOs, the ones most directly or indirectly impacting charitable nonprofits, and the latest on the legal challenges. https://lnkd.in/gzN7wk-E

  • Sharing a message from Maryland Nonprofits: Emergency Member Meeting: Federal Policy January 30?|?10 AM?|?Virtual It has been a rollercoaster 24 hours, with many organizations deeply concerned that critical funding would be frozen at 5 PM yesterday due to the President's executive order pausing all federal grants. Thankfully, within 24 hours, nonprofit advocates were successful in getting a?federal judge to halt the executive order yesterday,?and today, the administration has reportedly?rescinded the order.? Nevertheless, federal and state grant payments have been upended, portals gone dark, and confusion reigns. Maryland Nonprofits is holding an?emergency member meeting on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 10 AM?with the National Council of Nonprofits, one of the leaders that helped get the court to block the order. Members of the press and media are also invited to attend.? Registration link in the comments ??

  • All of us working in the nonprofit sector are urged to contact our member of Congress to oppose H.R. 9495, a bill that would give the Secretary of the Treasury unilateral power to strip nonprofit status from any 501(c) organization deemed a "terrorist supporting organization" at the Secretary's discretion. The House is set to vote on this bill Thursday, and it has received favorable votes in the past from both Democrats and Republicans. Urgent and united action is needed! H.R. 9495 poses significant risks to nonprofits by removing constitutional due process protections. Under this bill, the Secretary of the Treasury would gain extraordinary powers, placing the burden of proof on nonprofits to prove their innocence—a nearly impossible task. Even an unproven accusation could cause irreparable harm to a nonprofit's reputation and viability. Organizations providing humanitarian aid in conflict zones and those exercising their constitutionally protected rights to free speech on international conflicts could be affected. It is already illegal to provide material support to foreign terrorist organizations. Giving the Secretary of the Treasury unilateral power to revoke tax-exempt status without due process is unnecessary and dangerous. Take action to oppose H.R. 9495.

  • Does your organization have a Donor Advised Fund strategy? What has been your experience receiving/not receiving DAF gifts this year? Wondering if the shift in giving to DAFs was to give to Community Foundations - not to their DAF accounts but rather endowments or giving circles - as there seemed to be a trend upward in Community Foundation giving...or Mitch is onto something that folks are recovering from the 2022 market. The philanthropic eco-system is incredibly complex and DAF data is certainly important to track. Thanks, Mitch Stein for the insights! #DAFstrategy #DAFreport #Chariot #datadatadata

Actual footage of me crunching the new NPT DAF report numbers last night ?? It’s the biggest haul of DAF data every year and this year’s report contained some surprising, perplexing and exciting results - all in one ?? The numbers didn’t leave us with a crystal clear narrative on the state of the DAF market, so we did our best to highlight the biggest changes, and flag some possible explanations ?? Having gotten so deep into our own research on DAF data this year, I have a new appreciation for the challenges around this market and unexpected movements you see in any given year that are tough to explain ????♂? In any case, we are here, as always, to help distill the most relevant takeaways for the nonprofit sector ?????? We put together a top 10 takeaways list that will be published shortly (will put link in comments), but here are some that I’m paying closest attention to ?? ?? Most surprising ?? Contributions to DAFs have their biggest single year drop on record - 22% to $59 billion… While this might sound like a huge blow to DAFs, the market performed so well last year that total assets were still up 10% and sit at over $250 billion ?? I have some theories on this one - maybe folks saw their DAF account investments performing so well they didn’t see as much need to add more contributions last year? Maybe they were letting their personal investment portfolio recover a bit from 2022 before giving more? ?? Either way, I’m surprised that folks didn’t take more advantage of appreciated assets to make large contributions to their DAFs in 2023. Maybe just means 2024 will end up being a big swing the other direction! ?? Most perplexing ???? The number of accounts were basically flat YoY at 1.8 million.. but the prior year figures were revised materially without a footnote on what changed in the methodology … This is perplexing to me because most indications have been that DAFs are rising in popularity - from providers we work with, from nonprofits receiving their gifts, etc. ?? Personally, I feel like the real trends are obscured by something funky in the data on this one… maybe what I’m sensing from the market will be better captured in next year’s report ?? ?? Most exciting ?? Despite, these unexpected changes, the most important thing to nonprofits is that grant-making remained steady and greatly elevated from 2019 figures ?? We talk all the time about how DAFs change a donor giving psychology - making them less inhibited with giving since funds are pre-committed to philanthropy ?? So in a year when people were funding their accounts so much less, but still making the same grant volume as the year prior, that’s a very positive sign as to the valuable role DAFs will play in philanthropy for many years to come ?? Let me know what your biggest “a ha” moments or head scratchers were from the report. I’m excited to get into it ???? #nonprofit #fundraising #philanthropy
