Chainless Change (CCI) has always believed that the?liberation of Black, Brown, LGBTQ, poor, working-class,?and other oppressed communities is not reliant on a single policy, elected official, or seemingly groundbreaking idea. True change doesn’t happen overnight, so we never expected to wake up on November 6, 2024, to find all of?this country’s problems and broken promises?resolved by the decisions made by the majority of Americans at the polls. However, we held high?hopes of seeing incremental progress?through measures aimed at?strengthening the economy, making?housing affordable,?improving?access to healthcare,?loosening the grip of mass incarceration?on our communities, and, quite frankly,?acknowledging our humanity?through policies that?honor rather than target us and demonize our existence. ? That is not what we got. ? Instead, like many others, Wednesday we woke up feeling the disappointment of hope deferred. That is because?we know firsthand the challenges faced by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color?in this country. We live it every single day of our lives.?We’ve felt the sting?of having all the right qualifications, experience, and vision, along with a deep willingness to work tirelessly for our dreams—only to be met by an America that fails to truly see us, our worth, what we bring to the table, and who we have the potential to become. We know what it feels like to have a past decision become the reason the world sees us as beyond redemption––even when we have already demonstrated that?we are willing to take the high road and work twice as hard. Furthermore, as an organization founded by and for people with past convictions,?we?know that?justice and accountability do not come from the existing criminal legal system and legislation. Instead, second chances are too often reserved for those with access to wealth and privilege. ? The results are in. ? If nothing else, this week has been a reminder that?progress is not always linear?and that?the path forward still requires?the?courage to persist?in the face of setbacks. While carrying the weight of disappointment, we acknowledge that?change can only be powered by communities?like ours—those who refuse to be defined by a single moment?of our lives, policy, or elected official. ? We remain firm?in our dedication?to serving, uplifting, and?fighting for the rights?of those who often go through life unseen, unheard, and unforgiven. Together, we will?demonstrate how the?power of connection, compassion, and collective care?will always trump hate and injustice. And together, we will keep pushing for a future that honors our community's?dignity, voices, and dreams.? ? Sometimes, along this journey, we may need to pause, cry, grieve, and even let out some rage—but giving up is never an option. So today, we move forward—not because it’s easy, but because it’s necessary.
