Great post and article about the rise of AI companions. Social connection and intimacy - being part of a community - is at the heart of what it is to be human. There can be value for people that are truly isolated, but we should be focusing on ways to build community connections and social bonds. One important way to do this for some of the most vulnerable people in society is to help them age or manage their health issues in the community of their choice, surrounded by people they want to be near, instead of hiding them away in the depths of an impersonal facility. Can AI truly alleviate loneliness, or does it risk diminishing our capacity for real human intimacy? While conversational AI offers companionship and can help reduce isolation, it also raises concerns about creating false emotional connections. AI companions, like Replika and AI companions in a below article, may provide comfort but risk reinforcing societal stereotypes and detaching users from authentic human relationships.
