"This morning, it poured as we began our journey back to Fort Chaffee, where our American story began 49 years ago. Miraculously, the rain ceased upon our arrival at Chaffee Crossing Historic District, revealing ghostly remnants of the past. Fort Chaffee, where 50,796 refugees were welcomed in 1975, was where our family started anew. Walking through the museum, emotions flooded back as we remembered the uncertainty and confusion of that time. Yet, as kids, we adapted—playing ball, collecting crickets, and watching movies on hot summer nights. Today, our families have grown into two more generations, living the American Dream. We’re proud to bring our children and grandchildren back to where it all started, honoring the men and women of Fort Chaffee who helped us along the way." #FamilyHistory #FortChaffee #AmericanDream #PhamiLe

Over 150,000 American women served in the Woman’s Army Corps (WAC) during World War II. In the WAC, women first served as clerks, typists, stenographers, and drivers. As their skill and dedication were recognized, they later became weather observers and forecasters, cryptographers, communication specialists, sheet metal workers, parachute riggers, aerial photograph analysts, and many other jobs essential for winning the war. A 1991 Army Corps of Engineer report notes that much of the WAC history at Camp Chaffee has been lost. The map above has been edited to show the historic WAC camp location. The stone sidewalk leads from the current FCRA offices to the site. 170 WAC personnel were assigned to Camp Chaffee at any time. Happy International Women's Day.

This achievement showcases the dedication, vision, and a strong working relationship between VTRE, Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority and the City of Barling in driving economic growth for the region!
