Please pray for her little body's continued healing.” — Leah Brown, Hazel’s mom Hazel is a bright and joyful soul, finding magic in life’s simplest pleasures. Her laughter is contagious, and nothing lights up her face quite like a scoop of ice cream. But in July 2023, the laughter dimmed as her parents received devastating news — Hazel had an inoperable brain tumor. Now, the Brown family clings to faith over fear as they navigate each challenging day. This year, they welcomed Hazel’s baby brother, a beacon of hope amid their journey. Every other week, they make the trip from Ohio to Seattle Children’s Hospital where Hazel is enrolled in a promising CAR-T cell clinical trial. They are holding onto the possibility of brighter days ahead. Clinical trials have been developing rapidly over the last several years, due in part by funding from organizations such as ChadTough Defeat DIPG. A world like that should never have to exist and it’s hard to accept I’ve already had so many last times with my son. My heart outside my chest will beat for the last time in just a few months, I’ve been told." — Allison Camp Crew Camp was a lively and fearless 6-year-old from Seneca, SC when he was diagnosed with DIPG on September 11, 2023. After months of treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Crew is now home on hospice care, embracing every moment with his family. Known for his big heart and protective nature, Crew is his family’s guardian, especially to his big sister, Natalie. He finds joy in Minecraft, Roblox, and outdoor adventures on his ATV, always with his loyal dog Gwen by his side. Crew’s story is a powerful reminder to cherish every moment. As his mom, Allison, says, “Hug your children. Hug them tight. Never think this can’t happen to you, or a child you love.” DIPG is a devastating disease, but together, we can create hope. "Of the 11 participants who received CAR-T cells in the trial, nine showed benefits. Nine had functional improvement in the disabilities caused by their disease. Four had the volume of their tumors reduced by more than half. And one of those four participants had a complete response, meaning his tumor disappeared from brain scans. Sophia Ann Myers, also known as "SoSo", was wise and witty beyond her years. She loved to dance, sing, tumble, and tell jokes. She placed first with her team at a dance competition not long before she was diagnosed with DIPG. Although this type of cancer is considered "rare" she was the third child in her town to be diagnosed. After an eight-month battle with the disease, Sophia passed away in October 2017. This week on November 13, she would have turned 15 years old. Upon the loss of Sophia, her parents started the SoSo Strong Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation to help find a cure for DIPG and other pediatric brain tumors. We are thrilled to have them as a ChadTough Defeat DIPG Research and Navigator Partner as we work towards our shared mission.
