It is with a very sad and heavy heart that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved FVFD board member and administrative volunteer Joe McDonald. Joe joined the FVFD in June 2010 and has served as an active volunteer since that time. Almost every Thursday, Joe would assist with administrative tasks in fire administration and chiefs’ office. He was very active in special events coordination, smoke detector program, fire safety surveys, and Saturday public safety training for local citizens. Joe received the FVFD President’s award in 2016 and the department’s Employee of the Year award in 2020. Joe was a dedicated volunteer and public servant. He did every task with a passion for serving others. Joe served as a school crossing guard for several years after his retirement from the auto industry and was recognized in 2018 as one of the six most outstanding crossing guards for Fairfax County Public Schools. He previously served as a volunteer for Fair Oaks Hospital. Joe was also a proud U.S. Navy veteran. Additionally, Joe was a loving and proud father, grandfather, and brother. Rest in peace, our dear friend. You will be greatly missed by all.

???? Exciting kickoff for Fire Safety Week at Providence Elementary School! The City of Fairfax Fire Department presented engaging fire safety programs to our PreK, kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders. Students learned important fire safety tips and how to stay safe in emergencies. A big thank you to our firefighters for their dedication and to the school for hosting us! Over the next couple of weeks, our fire department will be visiting other schools throughout Fairfax City to continue spreading awareness. Let’s keep our community safe together! #CityofFairfax #FireSafetyWeek #CommunitySafety #ProvidenceElementary
