JD Vance has met with the leader of Germany's far-right Alternative fur Deutschland party, breaking a taboo in German politics as the Trump administration continues to court and promote far-right populist parties across Europe. At the meeting in Munich on Friday, the US vice-president and AfD leader, Alice Weidel, reportedly discussed the war in Ukraine, German domestic politics and the so-called brandmauer, or "firewall against the right", that prevents ultra-nationalist parties like AfD from joining ruling coalitions in Germany. A team of workers from the U.S. DOGE service developed step-by-step plans for carrying out President Trump's order to purge diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives from the federal government - and over the next six months intends to expand that campaign dramatically. DOGE aims to target staffers who are not in DEI roles and employees who work in offices established by law to ensure equal rights. In the coming weeks, DOGE has planned for the Trump administration to trim the staff from dozens of offices across the executive branch, including those that protect employees' civil rights and others that investigate complaints of employment discrimination in the federal workplace.
