??? “Having a systematic way to discuss [wire fraud] is the only way we can ensure that these conversations happen every time. If you just leave it up to chance, then we're only going to talk about it when we remember, right? It’s not something that the client is normally looking out for.” A massive thanks to the National Association of REALTORS? and Tracey, Safety Lady Hawkins, Chris Garrett, and Chris Atwell for discussing the latest findings from our State of Wire Fraud 2025 report and the importance of proactive conversations about the risks. ??

? Why is it so hard to prosecute wire fraud? Law enforcement faces a massive challenge: there are tens of thousands of money mules moving fraudulent funds, but prosecuting one individual doesn’t stop the broader operation. As Nathan Stephens, our Manager of Fraud Recovery Services explains, the real goal is to identify and take down the key orchestrators—the ones directing billions in fraud. But that’s no easy task. It requires years of tracking transactions, connecting cases, and sometimes even convincing lower-level actors to cooperate. And for victims, that often means justice feels slow or out of reach.

$928,660 PAYOFF FRAUD RECOVERED ?? In September, a title company asked to demo our wire prevention software. During the call, they told us they’d become a mortgage payoff wire fraud victim. "We’re talking money that will basically destroy our business," they told us. Our Fraud Recovery Services team jumped in. On the same day, we confirmed through our law enforcement contacts that the full amount was potentially recoverable. Expected return date: Mid-December. Everyone’s elated. Great news, right? Not so fast. December rolls around—no money. Lenders are furious and threaten foreclosure. We step in, calm the chaos, and reactivate the U.S. Secret Service. It turns out that the initiating bank made an error that blocked the funds. Our FRS team worked with the title company to fix it, but by February, the lenders were losing patience, demanding a title claim. Then, a week ago, the USSS confirmed that a check was on the way. Today, we heard from the title company that $928,660 is back in their account. Fraud happens. Recovery is tough. But when CertifID is involved, it’s possible. #FraudFriday #BEC #RealEstateWireFruad #FraudRecoveryServices

??? "Identity sits at the crux of all of this because the root cause is social engineering. Somebody is just impersonating somebody else." Stan—the money mule in a fraudulent real estate deal who came forward—pulled back the curtain on a scheme that could have gone unnoticed. As CertifID's Executive Chairman Thomas Cronkright highlights, his story is a glaring signal to the industry: if you can’t confirm who you’re dealing with, you’re playing a dangerous game.
