Don't miss CERF members Fulweiler Lab and Lena Champlin from Boston University present a webinar on "Co-Creating Climate Solutions: Designing Carbon Monitoring Tools for Salt Marshes" for the NERRS Science Collaborative on Wed, 4 Dec, 3 - 4pm ET. A team from Boston University and the five New England NERRs worked together to test sensors that measure carbon dioxide, temperature, and humidity in salt marsh environments. In this webinar, the team will describe the project’s approach to designing low-cost, ultra-portable instruments for measuring greenhouse gas fluxes in salt marshes, major findings that emerged from the work, as well as key applications of the technology for salt marsh restoration and research. 关于我们
The similarity and diversity of estuaries is also characteristic of the Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation (CERF), a multidisciplinary organization of individuals who study and manage the structure and functions of estuaries and the effects of human activities on these fragile environments. The Federation's members are dedicated to advancing human understanding and appreciation of the Earth's estuaries and coasts, to the wise use and management of these environments and to making the results of their research and management actions available to their colleagues and to the public. Members of the Federation include academic researchers, public sector managers, teachers, consultants, students and others who are interested in estuaries. MISSION The Federation advances understanding and wise stewardship of estuarine and coastal ecosystems worldwide. Its mission is to: - Promote research in estuarine and coastal ecosystems - Support education of scientists, decision-makers and the public - Facilitate communication among these groups

Yesterday, 13 November, #EstuariesandCoasts Coeditor in Chief Paul Montagna (Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi) represented CERF as a panelist for a House Science, Space, and Technology Committee staff briefing on the implementation of new White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) public access policies for federally funded research results and data. We were honored to join this esteemed panel and share our perspective as a small scientific society, along with experts Paolo Mangiafico (Duke University Libraries), Meagan Phelan (AAAS Science Magazine), Lori Schultz (The University of Texas at San Antonio), and moderator and past OSTP Director Dr. Kelvin Droegemeier (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign). We thank Dr. Victoria Long Rubin, House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology Senior Professional Staff and estuarine scientist, for inviting Dr. Montagna. CERF, along with the other members of the Consortium of Aquatic Science Societies, submitted a letter to OSTP strongly supporting the principles of open science and the importance of freely sharing research results in a timely and equitable manner, and also expressing concern about potential unintended consequences of policies on professional societies and the quality and equity of the research enterprise. Dr. Montagna reiterated the importance of #EstuariesandCoasts to supporting CERF's non-profit mission of disseminating high-quality science to advance the understanding and management of coastal and estuarine systems worldwide, and how the journal provides funds for CERF's other programs that help the coastal and estuarine research, management, and education community. He noted potential impacts on the administrative burden of compliance, findability of research results, quality of published research, financial sustainability of scientific societies, and obstacles for researchers with fewer resources to support open access publishing. Stay tuned for more information about the CASS letter and CERF's efforts to support equitable open access to research and data in our disciplines! #PublicAccessPolicy #OpenAccess #OpenScience #EquitableResearch #SciencePolicy #ResearchPolicy #Estuaries #CoastalScience #EstuarineScience Springer Nature
