CEOs and business leaders representing St. Louis’ premier global and regional businesses are uniting to change the course of cancer, leveraging the collective knowledge, power and resources of the American Cancer Society. Key local projects include sharing health and wellness best practices with the community and collaborating on projects to advance the mission of the Society, including providing a free home away from home for patients and their caregivers at the Hope Lodge. The chapter also raises funds to support groundbreaking research programs at local universities and empower their employees to engage in the mission of the American Cancer Society. Nationwide, there are more than 500 members engaged in the American Cancer Society CEOs Against Cancer program, representing a powerful network of the most prominent leaders in business today. Members bring the passion, expertise and resources needed to prevent, treat and cure this disease, which costs U.S. employers $225.8 billion each year.

Black and African American communities face bigger challenges when it comes to cancer, including higher death rates and lower chances of survival after diagnosis. A new article from the American Cancer Society explains these disparities, why they exist, and what needs to change to close the gap. But there’s also progress to celebrate. Since 1991, the cancer death rate among Black men has declined more than in any other group — proof that better treatment, less smoking, and more cancer screening are making a real difference.
