Four Types of Learning Credit to Jeroen Kraaijenbrink. Follow him for more on leadership & strategy. Original post below: ===== Learning is key to success. But did you know that people learn differently? Discover your style and become a better learner. Some learn better reading a book, others listening to a podcast, and yet others when watching others do something. In 1984, David Kolb wrote an important book about this, called ‘Experiential Learning.” He discovered four distinct “learning styles” and created the “learning cycle.” According to this cycle, learning happens through four stages: - Concrete Experience (Feeling): you do something, or something happens and this creates an experience. - Reflective Observation (Watching): you reflect on the new experience and on what it is that you didn’t know yet. - Abstract Conceptualization (Thinking): you make sense of what happened and modify your understanding. - Active Experimentation (Doing): you put your new understanding to the test. So, whenever you really want to learn something, it means you need to go through all these four stages. But that’s not all. Kolb also discovered that people have different styles that relate to different stages of the cycle. He identified four: 1. Diverging (Feel & Watch). These are the observers that look at things from different perspectives. They reflect on their experiences and like to use their imagination and creativity. 2. Assimilating (Watch & Think). These are thinkers. They carefully reflect and conceptualize what they see. They like to analyze and are good at abstraction and modeling. 3. Converging (Think & Do). These are the efficient problem-solvers that combine their analytical skills with a practical orientation. They want quick solutions and move on. 4. Accommodating (Do & Feel). These people are the do-ers. They are practice-oriented and mostly approach situations intuitively. They like new challenges and experimentation. I’m mostly a Converging type of learner. I’d like to look at something, think about it and then focus on solving it as quickly and efficiently as I can. A close second for me is the Assimilating type. Even though I do want quick solutions, I also like to play with concepts, models, theories and so on and think about how to improve or combine them. I believe you can clearly see these two styles in my posts: I assimilate what others are doing and writing, I think about what makes most sense and how we can do better, and I then turn it into short posts that—so I hope—are useful in practice. What is your preferred learning style? ===== ? Repost to help your network. The best teams aren’t the biggest. They’re the ones who refuse to quit. Early in my career, I kept hearing: "More people = More success." The reality? More usually meant: ?? More red tape. ??? More meetings that go nowhere. ?? More people just picking up a paycheck. Helping hundreds of CEOs taught me? one unforgettable lesson. Small teams move differently. Here’s how: ?? Relentless commitment to a shared mission ? Teams that believe in the goal? will move mountains to reach it. ? Purpose fuels resilience.? When things get tough, they push harder. ?? Speed, agility, and trust ? Small teams move fast.? Less bureaucracy, more execution. ? Every person is essential.? So, accountability is built in. ?? Extreme focus on impact ? Fewer resources? No problem.? Small teams innovate faster. ? Distractions don’t survive in a mission-driven culture. The game changers? The greatest breakthroughs,? the boldest moves, the biggest wins? They all started with a handful of people? who refused to quit. If you’re leading a small team, don’t chase scale. Chase clarity, speed, and conviction. Because together, a small team can achieve absolutely anything. ?? Have you seen a small team outperform a big one? Drop your experience in the comments. ?? Repost to help your network. Growth without structure is a ticking time bomb. Ask any successful CEO and they'll tell you: The cracks start small… Missed deadlines. Unclear priorities. Communication breakdowns. Then suddenly, your fast-growing company feels like it's coming apart at the seams. From my years building and scaling companies, I've seen this pattern repeat: Growth alone isn't enough. You need systems that scale. Processes that work. Leadership that inspires. The best CEOs don't just chase numbers— they build foundations for sustainable success. They transform their: ? Your experience might be your biggest weakness. Here's why… I've noticed something fascinating after working? with hundreds of CEOs and founders... The biggest predictor of success isn't talent,? connections, or resources. It's having an insatiable appetite for learning. Here's what 20+ years of experience has taught? me about learning in leadership: 1. Mindset Shifts That Matter: ? Stop seeing challenges as obstacles.? View them as opportunities to grow. ? Embrace being uncomfortable.? That's where the real learning happens. 2. The Learning Leader's Playbook: ? Schedule dedicated learning time.? Even 30 minutes a day compounds dramatically. ? Seek feedback actively, especially when it's? hard to hear. ? Turn your mistakes into teaching moments? for your team. 3. Warning Signs You're Blocking Your Own Growth: ? Defending your decisions instead of? examining them ? Surrounding yourself with people who only? agree with you ? Blaming external factors when things go wrong 4.?The Hidden Power of Being a Student: ? ? Your team will feel safer experimenting and taking risks ? You'll spot opportunities others miss ? Your organization becomes more adaptable and resilient The critical thing to understand: The most dangerous phrase in business isn't "I failed." It's "I already know that." Stay teachable.? Stay hungry.? Stay humble. The moment you stop learning is the moment? you start falling behind. What's the biggest lesson you've learned recently? Share below ?? ?? Repost to help your network. 7 essential strategies to build an unstoppable team: Most teams are good… Very few are extraordinary. The difference? How you build them. 20+ years of helping elite leaders,? has shown me exactly what it takes? to build a high-performing team: 1. Set the Standard from Day One ? Mediocre expectations create mediocre results. ? Be crystal clear about what excellence looks like,? ?then chase it daily. ?? 2. Hire People Who Get Things Done ? Resumes don’t create results. Problem-solving does. ? Prioritize action-takers over credential-collectors. ?? 3. Build Leaders, Not Just Employees ? Your team shouldn’t need permission to move forward. ? Trust them. Empower them. And watch them rise. 4. Create a Culture of Accountability ? No blame games. No excuses. ? Shift from “Who messed up?” to “How can we fix this?” 5. Remove What’s Slowing Them Down ? Fix the friction. Eliminate recurring roadblocks,? ?unnecessary approvals, and pointless meetings. ? High-performers won’t stick around? ?if they're caught up in trivial red tape. 6. Make Growth the Standard ? The best teams are always evolving. ? Challenge them with new and exciting opportunities,? ?not just their routine workload. 7. Recognize Your Team ? People don’t just work for paychecks.? ?They work for a purpose. ? Praise effort, attitude, and execution, not just results. The bottom line? A team’s potential isn’t defined by talent alone. It’s shaped by the standards you set,? the trust you build, and the obstacles you remove. What shift will you make to strengthen your team today? ?? Repost to help your network.
