xAI released Grok 3 last week. All reports so far are that it is a very impressive model with strong reasoning, writing and coding capabilities. It is also the most unrestricted model that’s been released by any of the major AI labs. Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and even Meta spend months testing frontier models for safety. They “red team” the models to identify vulnerabilities, biases, and potential risks associated with AI systems. Red teamers take an adversarial approach to evaluating the model’s robustness, fairness, security, and alignment with ethical standards. It appears xAI willfully skipped this step. And they’re proud of it. In addition to Elon Musk’s ability to make technological advancements through ingenuity, insane work ethic and seemingly infinite resources, xAI’s competitive advantage—for the moment—is a willingness to release the most unhinged and potentially dangerous model, and let society figure it out.
