?? What is the difference between First Generation and Next Generation Data Science? ?? In this newest episode of the Data Science Podcast, we pick up where we left off with Mark Brady, Deputy CDO of KBR inc. and a former DOJ, Space Command and Space Force CDO. Give it a listen! ?? "First generation foundation might be something like data life cycle. You see that in a lot of data strategic documents that an organization will use to start a program, but it turns out that it's not an accurate model. Nobody uses or manages their data in a data life cycle; it just doesn't happen and it shouldn't happen." #podcast #datascience #datamanagement #cdo #govcon

Several top federal tech experts, including U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Executive Director for Enterprise Command Operations, Robert (Bob) Cunningham, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Chief Information Security Officer, Dr. Tiina K.O. Rodrigue, EdD - she/her, and U.S. Department of Education's Technology Directorate Office of Federal Student Aid Chief Information Security Officer, Davon Tyler, CISSP, among others, spoke at the ServiceNow Federal Forum and outlined their respective agency's plans for automation. Tyler emphasized the importance of integration, saying: “How do we take the data in other environments and integrate it into a holistic environment so that we can make better decisions so that we can power tools that have AI and automation and really drive forward?” Good data integration and management truly is indispensable, and focusing on it is a smart move to make any automation effort succeed! Defense Information Systems Agency Chief Technology Officer and Director of Emerging Technology, Steve Wallace, talked about the advances being made with their new AI tool, called Concierge AI, that would help the agency manage their high volumes of data and help them address cybersecurity concerns. He also touched on the challenges of using and maintaining high quality databases: "(...) how do we secure them? How do we make sure that we’re doing the right thing by the data that we’re ultimately storing?" This is true! Effective data management is one of the cornerstones of reliable AI. The care and effort DISA is putting towards it will no doubt pay off by making Concierge a great addition to the agency's toolkit! #data #ai #govcon #datamanagement Read more: https://lnkd.in/gEUg3RUU

GSA Chief Information Officer, david shive, spoke about how his agency found a balance between preserving data security and allowing their workforce to explore AI's possibilities. During the Elastic Public Sector Summit, he said: "AI has been a force multiplier in allowing us to extract value out of our data stores in ways that were just never previously possible". While AI is a valuable tool, it's imperative that we keep in mind that it needs high-quality and safe data so that it can operate efficiently. Kudos to the GSA for overcoming those obstacles! #data #govcon #ai #gsa #datasecurity #federalgovernment Read more: https://lnkd.in/dZiN8hyW

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is putting into action an AI initiative in order to process the large volumes of data they handle every day and improve the services they provide. Deputy Technology Officer, Kimberly M., gave an interview to Federal News Network, where she stated: "As data scientists, we understand the math and the computers, but how an algorithm will actually fit into a workflow, actually impact end users, that really requires everyone to be at the table from the beginning." As AI use cases grow and become more prominent, it's crucial that we learn to handle data in a way that's secure and prioritizes its accuracy so we can obtain the best results. The work they're doing at the VA is an impressive example of how this technology can improve all of our lives. #data #ai #govcon #va #bigdata Find the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/du5qfZen

?? For this episode of the Data Science Podcast comes the third part of our conversation with U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) former CIO and CDO. Here is a snippet of our conversation regarding best practices in terms of procurement: ?? "...and I think that what I've seen in terms of the best practices, in terms of procurement and I hope they grow is, you know, literally leveraging what I'll call show me style engagements where the government agency actually sits down with the contract holders. So let's say they've established a BPA and they do a walkthrough of their existing environment. They say, look, this is our existing environment and how it works. I'm going to show you how it works. And then they let the contractors, let's say it's 4 or 5 BPA holders, ask questions and then they allow them to bid on it. And I think that as contractors, as government contractors trying to serve the country, that's lowering your business development costs significantly, where you're just chasing work and it's increasing the dollars that you're putting towards solutioning." ?? I'm very excited to share with you the last part of our conversations, discussing the challenges faced in government procurement and the need for improvement, the contrast between classic and modern procurement practices, evaluation criteria for contractors, coding and integration challenges, and more! The UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY is using AI tools and machine learning processes in order to better manage their data. Chief Information Officer, Jane Overslaugh Rathbun, asserted that these processes makes threat identification "more agile and effective", but that it all depends on the quality of the data. "I go back to (...) 'How can we (...) rethink how we store data, when we classify our data, and how we manage it, so that we can take advantage of these things like large language modeling?'," she asked. Tackling those isssues will demand some effort, but we're certain the Navy will continue to find ways to optimize their data application to aid their mission.
