November 21st is Children's Grief Awareness Day, a time to recognize and support these young individuals. Centrica Care Navigators partner Communities in Schools of Michigan for our Grief 101 program, serving students K-12 in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek school districts to support school-aged children and youth who are experiencing grief. ?? Grief 101 meets weekly for six, one-hour sessions and is facilitated by one of Centrica’s grief support counselors.? ?? ?? Meet Lizzy the dog, one of our pet therapy volunteers! Lizzy loves to run off her leash... and she doesn't like red lights when she's in the car, and we don't blame her! Even people who don’t love dogs are glad to know pet therapy is available to Centrica Care Navigators patients who need a special kind of companionship. The role of a therapy pet is one that a lot of dogs are well-suited to: they make visits to hospice patients at their home or in a care facility. Some patients simply like to see a dog, or maybe pet it while it sits calmly. Other times, dogs rest while patients reminisce about their own pets over the years. Currently, we have 10 therapy pets — all dogs — visiting with patients throughout our 10-county service area, including two golden retrievers, a greyhound, and a pair of poodles who are actually brother and sister. In our last Journeys session, participants explored the concept of the "invisible string." This metaphor represents the deep, emotional connections we share with the important people in our lives. The invisible string remains, even after someone dies, continuing to link us to them through memories, objects, scents, places, and moments. Throughout our lives, these connections will tug on our invisible strings, gently reminding us that the bond with those we've lost still endures. They created personalized memorial lanterns with Centrica Care Navigator volunteers and grief counselors that they can illuminate during upcoming holiday gatherings as a way to memorialize their loved one that died. Journeys is Centrica Care Navigators' year-round grief counseling for children, teens and their families who are hurting after the death of a loved one. November is Children's Grief Awareness Month, and Centrica Care Navigators is committed to helping young people in their grief journey. Our Journeys grief group is a special year-round group for grieving children, teens and their families who are hurting after the death of a loved one. Here they can express and process their thoughts and feelings, learn healthy coping skills and interact with others close in age. In a combined effort Langland Family Funeral Homes, Heartland Hospice and Centrica Care Navigators welcomed all to honor and remember loved ones in a candle lighting ceremony, supporting one another in this life's journey over the weekend. Our chaplain honored veterans, our music therapist played music, and our grief counsellors welcomed guests.
