The Central Ohio Down Syndrome Society (CODSS) is an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization started in March 2009 to forward three critical issue areas: 1) Down syndrome research; 2) legislation; and 3) parent/family services. CODSS is credited as the only local Down syndrome group in the country to convene it’s own scientific research advisory panel. ? CODSS is credited as the only local Down syndrome group in the country to have its own state/federal legislative lobbyist. Just recently, the National Down Syndrome Society applauded CODSS for its direct role in securing the support and agreement of Ohio U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown to co-sponsor the Trisomy 21 Translational Research Parity Act that was just introduced in Congress.? The Bill seeks to increase federal funding for Down syndrome research. CODSS has developed enduring strategic partnerships with nationally acclaimed research institutions, including Nationwide Children’s Hospital, the Davis Heart & Lung Institute at The Ohio State University, and the Down Syndrome Research & Treatment Foundation.? CODSS is the first and only Down syndrome organization to help families fill the gap in county provided special needs services and therapies by offering members free access to regular health & wellness clinics, and group physical therapy, speech and occupational therapy sessions. The future depends on what we do in the present.
