Over $5 million has been donated to the One SC Fund at Central Carolina Community Foundation to rebuild communities severely impacted by Hurricane Helene. This represents the largest single-cause contribution to the One SC Fund since its establishment in 2015. In 1999, Healing Species was founded when Cheri Thompson created the Compassion Education and Violence Prevention curriculum, which teaches students compassion, responsibility, and love through “dogs of last resort” recovery stories. The One SC Fund is now accepting grant applications from nonprofits for Hurricane Helene relief, recovery, and rebuilding efforts across South Carolina. Funds can be used to support nonprofit projects that serve low-to moderate income residents in South Carolina counties with an Individual Assistance disaster declaration from FEMA. The first grant has been given to Feeding the Carolina in the amount of $450,000 to support local food bank efforts. In response to Hurricane Helene, over $4.5 million has been contributed to the One SC Fund through the Central Carolina Community Foundation, including a $2.5 million grant from The Duke Endowment. The One SC Fund provides financial support to nonprofits responding to Hurricane Helene in South Carolina counties with a FEMA disaster designation. This vital funding will support nonprofits across South Carolina as they provide immediate relief and long-term recovery assistance to communities and individuals affected by the hurricane. The One SC Fund, the statewide philanthropic response to natural disasters, is actively responding to Hurricane Helene. $1 million has been committed to the fund since it was activated on October 1. Funds given support local nonprofits across South Carolina providing Hurricane Helene relief and recovery. The following major commitments have been made: Walmart Foundation - $400,000, Dominion Energy - $300,000, AT&T - $50,000, Spectrum by Charter Communications - $50,000, and Verizon - $50,000. Duke Energy Corporation Foundation has issued a challenge, matching donations made to the One SC Fund up to $100,000. $41,985 has been given from individual donors. Members of the public may contribute at www.OneSCFund.org. Happening now: Erin Johnson, Vice President of Community Investment, is speaking at Governor Henry McMaster’s hurricane response briefing.
